Well, the Simpsons isn't supposed to be, and they actually are following a format called Comedia del'Arte. It deals with comedic sterotypes, and originally used in... Italy, I think. All the main characters have eqivelent del'Arte characters that fit a sterotype. So, as far as mindless entertainment goes, I actually hold the Simpsons a little higher then the rest because of that. |

They are. There are so many references to so many things, that you can watch lots of different episodes and still have them making references to the same thing- I saw two totally different episodes that both were based on Lord Of The Flies. |
