Aliens Online was billed as a massively multiplayer first-person shooter, with minor RPG elements, developed by Mythic Entertainment (Dark Age of Camelot) and available exclusively by the now-entombed subscription gaming service Gamestorm in the late 1990s. Based on the movie Aliens, there were two sides to play: Marine or Alien. The aliens were an absolute blast to play: low health, spectacular agility, and phenomenal at ambushes. They were granted far more information about the environment than were the human-faction players. There were mobs of stupid-AI noise that the humans could dispatch at only moderate risk, during which the human-controlled aliens could distract, confuse, and eventually and luckily slaughter them. Because of the polish put into balance and playstyle differences in AO, I was later quite disappointed when I attempted to play Aliens v. Predator, which was far more of a conventional "do it yourself" FPS. So I now have found a game with similar faction differences: Left 4 Dead, where I love the idea of playing as Infected, an asynchronous, strategic, sneaky faction in an FPS. Please someone remake Aliens Online, licensed or no. |
