It sounded high when I first read this, as Hockey has never been a success on TV in the US. However , I was listening to a show and they discussed some of the reasons for this

1) Hockey Fans in the US are the most affluent of any sport (including golf) .. I found that odd, but both Sports Management Group and StanFord University concurred on a study
2) they are also the most tech savy
3) they are also young, 18-45 age range
4) high percentage of hockey fans favorite teams are outside the regional markets

So you add all this together, plus the fact that the deal includes European Rights to NHL games and streaming.

The streaming of games is major part of the deal, as streaming has become popular and they think they think it's only the tip of the iceberg, especially with computer savy males. In addition with the avg income of the tv viewer they can get away with less viewers and maintain commercial venue from upper end clients like Cadillac (goes back to the old Rosanne/Seinfeld argument, that Rosanne had higher ratings but to advetise on Seinfeld you paid more)

Last years playoffs television ratings were also strong

I was hoping they'd get back on ESPN. In the past year or two, they have EXPLODED the amount of NBA coverage and ratings, no reason they couldn't do it with Hockey as well. Plus, with a real possibility of work stoppages in the NFL and NBA, they'd be able to get much, MUCH higher ratings if packaged right. VS is hard to find for most people, NHL Network is hit or miss as far as showing exciting games, and local Fox Sports channels have horrible camera work and murky pictures.

BUT, I'll take what I can get.
Now if NBC would show more than a 1200 game once a week, that might be something.
