Will the World Cup be watched in the US?

Bogie

Let's see if we cannot convert the poor misguided fella :)

Glenn, most references to Soccer usage seem to stem from nations where soccer-football was largely adopted after a different game was already widely referred to as Football. In the US example and Canada, this would be the game with the pointy ball thingy with the forward lobbing stuff :)

The term "soccer" seems to have come from the abbreviation for "association football" which was originally used in the US and other countries to distinguish it from other games already widely played.

However, the US and Canada are not unique in this. Ireland and Australia, for example, have also used the term soccer. This is due to Gaelic Football in Ireland and Australian Rules Football in Aus.

Rugby is also referred to as Football in UK and has an organized history as long as soccer-football does.

K, even I am confused by all of this now.

My two cents anyway :p

Good Vibes

I'm glad ESPN is promoting this. If the USA were to win against England it would be great, but we have to have more depth. If we were to get a draw, I'd be happy. The US team has made a lot of strides, but our defenders are going to be shredded by guys with pace, unfortunately. We have three "world class" players. Donovan, Dempsey and Howard. I'm Spurs supporter, for someone that follows the EPL.
