Will the World Cup be watched in the US?

First game for the US squad: vs England, 2:30 pm EST on a Saturday in June, on ABC. Will Americans tune in? No NFL, no college sports...just baseball to compete with. The US is the decided underdog in this opening match, but if we pull the upset it could really get US fans fired up about our World Cup chances.

I will be watching, and my soccer-fanatic oldest son (he's a Man U fan, Ger) will be there to give me color commentary. :D

More Manure? Dammit!

I think it will be watched quite a lot actually this time around. The time difference puts games on during the day and the expat communities will be roaring for the games I am sure. Solid recent performances by the US should help also. I think it should go down pretty well.

Here in Costa Rica we are all pretty much set with our favourite bars as home base for the England and Spain games. Lots of support here for all the Spanish speaking countries like Argentina, Honduras, et al.

Gonna be fun!

I wonder where the name soccer comes from. Is it even used as slang in the rest of the world from football?. Generally in the US and Canada the British/French/Dutch came over, they would have been calling it football back then, they didn't land and say phew we found a new world, lets call football soccer, and a spanner a wrench.

I'll be hoping for England, but I don't think owen hargreaves is on the team this year and he's the closest link to anything Canaidian at the World Cup
