I don't know jack about soccer/football, but even I know the US just got a dream draw here. England is of course the favorite in the group, but we get them in the first game, and there's no excuse for the US and England not to advance to the next round with this group.

And even after they advance, the powerhouses are on the other side of the bracket, so the US could go very deep into the tourney and the England could be a darkhorse to win it.

Agreed Nolan. Really good chance for the US to make it out of this group. But watch out for Slovenia. They did finish second in their group and then knock out the Russians in the playoff. Perhaps underestimated. But perhaps they are that good too. Can't wait to find out!

Sean & Ger, if you had to handicap the England-US match, what would you say the US's chances are assuming they stay healthy?

Interesting question Nolan. Ladbrokes is offering England at 1/2 and USA at 5/1. Draw is 5/2. Paddy Power is similar at 8/15, 5/1 and 11/4. But those odds will reflect the heavy betting in the UK also and not necessarily a pure comparison of the teams.

In terms of comparing the coaching and actual team quality, I think that US would have a 3-1 shot. There really is a big difference between the two teams. However, it is certainly doable. This is the world cup after all and a seriously fired up US team could easily catch England off guard early. However, if they do not, then time will work in England's favour in terms of strategic ability and talent.

Since Ireland is out, and I carry a UK passport, I am afraid I will have to be pulling for England Nolan. Apologies mate.

Cheers,
Sean
