It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining brilliantly and there was not a cloud in the sky. It was the complete antithesis of good weather for vampires to venture outdoors. Which meant it was a grand day for Penelope Day. Penny wore her large, movie star sunglasses along with an over-sized white tank top which had a blue smiley face printed on it. Jeans and flip-flops completed the outfit that was quite appropriate for today's weather. Her far too large Hello Kitty purse hung from her shoulder, banging against her hip as she walked. Today she was going to meet her friend Oliver in Central Park. She had brought along some breadcrumbs in the bag to feed the pigeons. A slight breeze brushed her reddish-orange bangs from her forehead as she walked along with the heavily crowded street. She hoped that Oliver would be somewhere in plain site, already where they agreed to meet. It wasn't easy finding him, as he blended in well with a crowd. Unlike Penny, whose hair gave her away every time. This was why no one played hide-and-seek with her, that and some nonsense about it being a kid's game. Whatever. She couldn't even drink legally yet, she could play hide and seek if she wanted. She strolled through the entrance to the park, a tune on her lips. After approaching a certain bench in particular, she frowned. Oliver wasn't there yet. Glancing around just to be sure she didn't see him first, she took a seat on the bench and dug through her bag for the bread crumbs. Grabbing a fistful, she tossed them onto the path. Nearby pigeons began to gather and peck at the breadcrumbs. As the pigeons enjoyed their snack, Penny glanced around once more for Oliver, frowning when she still didn't see him. Oh well. The pigeons would be her friends until he showed up. |

Oliver was running late. Typically one had a good reason for proving incapable of meeting a friend at the pre-agreed on time, such as car troubles (Oliver prided himself for keeping his car in such top-notch shape, especially considering his recent financial troubles), family and/or friend squabbles (his family? Intact. His friends? Either in their respective classes or jobs, or coordinating mass get-togethers for Mario Kart challenges), or something just dumb and trivial. For example, Mr. Archer found himself late to his Sociology of Music class, one of his favorites in his junior year of college, simply because MTV ran a marathon of True Life, which left him (and his then stoned roommate) utterly enthralled. Was it stupid? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes. But was it a better excuse than just straight-up forgetting? Yes. Penny, the friend waiting for him, was something of a firecracker, and if she learned he was late just because he forgot, rather than a life or death situation of which there was no escaping, a moral quandary to end all quandaries (to re-define the word, even!), Oliver would never hear the end of it for the rest of their friendship. Penny already had enough shit on him. Why add to it? (Additionally, there was the very, very, very miniscule, insignificant reason of Oliver not wanting Penny to think less of him. It wasn't as if he liked her or anything, oh no. Not like he wanted to live in a perpetual state of giving off a great impression. No way.) Needless to say, Oliver left his apartment and jumped on his bike the second he remembered his plans with Penny. For a smoker of roughly five years, he managed to book it to Central Park in record time, only with a few pedestrian incidents here and there. Minor casualties, as his sister called it. Ten points if you hit them. Upon reaching his destination, Oliver considerably lessened his speed and began the hunt for Penny. She shouldn't be hard to miss, after all, as she was the proud owner the brightest red hair Oliver had ever seen and migrated towards just as bright clothing and accessories. |

The pigeons happily pecked away at the breadcrumbs that Penny tossed out for them. Her mind was elsewhere, though, as she fed the pigeons. She wondered where Oliver was. Of the two of them, she would more than likely be the one who was late. She hadn't been at the park for long, though, and elected to give him a good five more minutes to show up before she would call and demand to know his location, as if her life depended on seeing him. It didn't, of course, but Penny did have a bit of a flair for dramatics. Besides, even if her life did not rely on seeing Oliver as often as possible, it wasn't as if she didn't like seeing the guy. He was one of her very best friends. He put up with all her antics and her strong views against vampires that some people saw as slightly psychotic for some reason. Psh. Hippies. She glanced down the path and saw a boy approaching on a bicycle in the distance. Ah, there he was. She smiled a bit, glad to see that he had not forgotten her and stood from the bench, quickly running behind it and hiding in the bushes. Hopefully he hadn't seen her hide. His punishment for being late was going to be a grand juvenile prank that involved her jumping out from the bushes and yelling "BOO!" It all relied on the element of surprise. |
