March was good at butchering things. He supposed. So he stepped forward. *** Philomel snuck around out the back. Curiosity was like a fish line, and she was thoroughly hooked. The four kids were all in a line. The woman was barking orders. Philomel walked down the street, passed the nicer houses, closer to where the fishing establishments were. And then there were the docks. ""Anyone know how to navigate, adjust sails, scrub my boat floors 'til they shine, or butcher and cook any sort of goat, chicken, sheep or pig, stand forward. Those who don't know how to do anything...." She didn't know how to do any of those things. She moved in towards the shadows, and waited. |

Keit made a slight gasp as he thought he saw something or someone move behind him, off to the right. But when he looked over there properly, he saw nothing. He brushed it away, assuming it was just his imagination, or the sun playing trickes, or something, and turned back to the captain. "Mr. Ackland, what can you do?" she said to the boy, peering down at him. She was finding she wasn't all that keen on having him sign onto the crew, and was having some regrets. But she needed more people, as her ten or so friends on board weren't enough to sail her big galleon properly. Fourteen - or fifteen, counting herself - in total was cutting it mighty close. She figured she would have to man the helm. |

"Perfect," said Naomi. "You can be our butcher." "You," she said to Keit. "If you had to pick one of those things to learn how to do, cook, clean, navigate, or adjust sails, which would you do?" "I'll adjust sails," said Keit nervously. "Good, stand over by him," she said, pointing to March. Keit stepped uneasily over to March. "Hattie's your name, right?" asked Naomi, pointing to the girl. "Cook, navigate, or clean, take your pick." Edited by Keira, May 25 2008, 12:57 AM.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" said March. "So I can butcher things? Not much worse than climbing masts and adjusting sails." He edged away from Keit. *** Philomel still watched. She noticed the possibility for skirmishes later on; perhaps this was a bad idea. Some of these people looked dangerous. She didn't want to get caught up in something like that. |

Keit didn't say anything, but looked away from March. He couldn't make up his mind whether or not he liked him. While his face looked nice, and he reminded him somewhat of a lost puppy, there was something else about him that made Keit sense he had been involved in a few arguments or fights in his time, whether for better or for worse. |

Just to clarify, Hettie is about eleven or twelve and Derek is about twenty-one ish, he's not entirely sure. They are not related. Hettie bit her lip, "Er . . . I can clean and er . . . things . . ." she said uneasilly. Derek absently shook some dirt from his shirt and looked the captain in they eye. "I have some sailing experience in fishin', I can cook fairly well and I know how to hurl sails an' such." He glanced back to the harbour for a second and felt a chill on the back of his neck. Something wasn't right . . . |

"Good," said Naomi. "Hattie, you can help with cleaning and mending sails, or floors, or whatever it is that needs it around the ship. Derrek, I'm going to put you with sails, since you have experience, instead of Keit. Keit, you can cook. Can everyone live with this?" Keit nodded. He didn't really know much about cooking, but he was a decently fast learner, and could probably get the hang of it soon enough anyway. |

Philomel looked around. No one was looking. she scooted out of the shadows, up the gangplank, onto the ship. |

Bleh, I just realized I've been spelling Hettie's name wrong. Oops! Keit darted his head around, seeing something moving behind him again. He was always a little jumpy though, so he figured that he wasn't really anything to bother with. |
