Naomi sighed getting a little annoyed with the hot sun, and the undecided boy. "You can stand over there by the other girl." She pointed, and leaned back over the desk to the parchment, marking a "?" next to March's name. Taking off her hat and placing it on the desk, she leaned back again on the bench. At twenty-one, Keit wasn't quite sure what he wanted to do. The harbor was a large place, and for one who had just left home, it was a new world. He wandered, with his sack slung over one shoulder, around, trying to find any sort of sailor or fisherman with whom he could learn from. He spotted a woman sitting on a bench at one of the docks, dressed quite similarly to himself, a parchment in front of her. Sensing opportunity, he began walking steadily toward her. "Excuse me, ma'am?" he said. "Are you looking for crew members?" Naomi looked at the kid. "Yep, you willing to join?" "Yes," said Keit eagerly. Naomi nodded towards the paper. "Sign there. What do you want to do?" "Oh," said Keit. "I don't know. You see, I was just wondering whether I might be able to learn - " "Just stand over there by the other two," said Naomi, nodding toward them. "We'll get jobs sorted out later then." "Thank you," said Keit, finishing off his signature, and adjusting the sack on his shoulder. Edited by Keira, May 24 2008, 02:22 PM.

Derek sighed as he read Hettie's scrwled writing 'sori i tooc yor kloths im gonig on an ship.' It was typical of Hettie to do something as stupid as that and he knew exactly which ship she was planning on going on, the whole of the docks had been talking about it. Grabbing his pocket knife he ran out onto the street and towards the docks. He spotted the Captain sitting at a desk, two lads stood next to Hettie who was dressed in clothes he recognised as his own. They swamped her and made her look smaller and skinnier than she already was. "What do you think you're doing girl?" he called to her. Hettie gave a startled jump when she heard Derek's voice. She glanced at the Captain nervously and quickly jogged over to him, "Derek! I left you a note, I'm going whether you like it or not so don't try and make me go back to Madame D'Cane's, I can't sew and you know it." Derek frowned, "You mean she let you on? What's wrong with her? She must have seen you're only a child." he said taking Hettie by the arm and trying to steer her away. Hettie resisted. "Yes she did. I want adventure Derek, and adventure doesn't wind up here very often." "Don't you think it'll be dangerous? No one's been up there before and look at her crew, three kids!" "You could come, you're twenty-one . . ." Derek raised his eyebrows, He knew he wasn't going to change her mind, but he couldn't let her go alone . . . |

Naomi saw something going on between Hattie and someone who looked as though he might be related to her. She pushed the desk out and got up, walking over to her tiny crew. "Excuse me," she said to the guy, "what's going on? This fine lass just signed onto my crew. If you're not going to join yourself, I suggest you back away from them." She touched her hand to the hilt of her sword, but didn't hold onto it quite yet. |

March stayed to the edge of the conflict. Four people. Hmm. If he jumped in now, he could get away with the sword, and maybe something else. Money perhaps? But then he'd go from the custody of a job to the government. There was something familiar about the man. Where had he seen him before? Oh yes. March had tried to steal from him. "I'll, uh, just be going over this way," said March. "You know, before you start fighting and they come." |

Derek glared at the Captain for interupting them, he glanced at her sword for a moment and felt a jolt of fear from knowhere. "I hope you're not threatenin' me Ma'am . . . If I was you I wouldn't worry, she'll not let me take her from your crew." He turned back to Hettie and smiled faintly, then he remembered . . . "Het, I can't let you go alone, you're only twelve and I promised your Father I'd look after you till he came back." "You know as well as I that he won't," Hettie bit her lip, not wanting to talk about this infront of the Captain. "Derek, you don't have to . . . What about your job?" "I lost it, why do you think I went back early, ol' Mick says there's not enough fish to fish. Laid off thirty men who've worked there thier whole lives and ten lads; me included." Derek said quietly. He smiled at Hettie reissuringly and then turned back to the Captain, "So Ma'am, if you'll 'av me?" |

"Glad that's done and sorted," said Naomi. "You can sign over there on the parchment." She then noticed March slinking over somewhere. "Come back here, Mr. Ackland!" she called. "There's nothing worth stealing on my ship, unless you fancy yourself a goat or a sheep!" Keit looked over to the boy whome the captain was shouting at. He looked about eight or so years younger than himself*. There was something about this March that made Keit feel a bit uneasy. Perhaps it was the pronounced limp he walked with, or the dirtiness of his face, or the unkempt look of his hair. He didn't know, but kept his distance. *OOC - Just a quick note, I switched Keit's age to twenty-one. The way I imagined him, he looked quite a bit older than seventeen, which I realized last night. |

*Out of character:Keira, since when was March thirteen? Remember, you have no right to god mod! And now look what you've done. You made me do math. To clarifyMarch is of unclarified age that is probably a bit older than thirteen. I guess. I don't pay much attention to age, but to make things easier, or harder, as the case may be, he doesn't look as hold as he is. Which I'm sure is a bummer. And to this I say: RPing is fun and annoying at the same time. March swung back toward the group as if he were on a leash. It was starting to swell, but not quite tumescent. He doubted any of them had any sailing experience. Some rag tag crew for sailing north. And there was someone new, giving him a very odd look. More like a grimace. March grinned, and sat on a barrel by the roster. "Do we all have to stand here while you wait for the people who aren't coming? If you wait long enough you'll only get the rest of the rats." |

You told me he was thirteen that time when you were just talking about it, because we had nothing else to talk about. Of course, it was late at night, so I might not have been paying attention. Oops. ![]() "Excuse me," said Naomi, a bit annoyed at this. "Last time I checked, you were not the captain. I have some old friends already on board. If you're so eager to set sail, why don't you get up on the ship and start sailing yourself." |

I don't remember mentioning that.I must have been mistaken. "I just don't like the rats. Sorry." *** Philomel watched with mild curiosity. What was going on, she wondered? A few ragtag kids and a woman arguing. It looked like a very large and dysfunctional family. And there was the ship her father had been talking about. The one that would be going north, to lead the crew to their deaths. She got up, and started down the stairs. |

Naomi grunted. "Alright!" she shouted to her four man crew. "Anyone know how to navigate, adjust sails, scrub my boat floors 'til they shine, or butcher and cook any sort of goat, chicken, sheep or pig, stand forward. Those who don't know how to do anything, you'd best just step back for awhile and I'll deal with you in a moment. Keit didn't know anything, and just stayed put. He supposed he could have cleaned floors, but he wasn't really sure. |
