I figured this out just the other day, and I think it's handy for books with distinct story lines and multiple viewpoint characters.

The trick is to edit by story lines. Let's say you have five sort of story lines that come together at the end, and you have five viewpoint characters. They way you've structured your novel is that each character has it's own story line and chapter.

Editing by story lines means that you take character A, go through their chapters, and edit those as a whole. Then you go through B, C, D, E, etc... And then I suppose you go through the whole thing afterwards, now that you have the story lines cleaned up.
