i'm gonna say... gattica, or something like that. kid with a heard defect wants to be an astronaut, takes the place of a genetically perfect guy who ended up paralyzed...? or am i completely wrong? anyway, i see where you're coming from. another thing that comes to mind, for me at least, is what that kind of genetic engineering'd mean for the military. this train of thought scares me, haha. its the restriction of information and research that i have a bit of a problem with. i dont feel we'll ever truly be able to stop that mad scientist in all of us trying to better the human race, in their own perspective. while i agree that these methods of population control could be vital the strength of the human race as a whole, i will always be an advocate to research. this, of course, begs the question, what will be done with this research? cant do much to answer this, but human nature dictates it will be put into effect somewhat. it, i suppose, is then the job of whatever political body is in charge, to dictate regulations. i dont know, though... quite the burden to know how to help one, but not being allowed to... i personally dont believe being shielded by naivety's a good thing, but it'd be easier. food for thought, i suppose. (heh, this probably makes no sense... i'm really tired right now, sorry...) |

I definitly agree. When you said that you don't know what this would do for the Army, i instantly though about cloning. Talk about practical ways of cloning. First of all, this could be good because we would have a huge army and no americans would be fighting. However, this would completely mess up the whole idea that war is a natural control over population. |

I think it should be forbidden. It would end up that instead of going to a "Build-a-Bear"-shop you would go to a "Build-a-Baby"-shop and seriously, is that human?? Its ok to manipulate the genes if its to prevent the baby from getting for example Downs Syndrom or any other serious complications |

For war, Avs, you see it as cloning, which I agree. But also, if we don't go that far, what about super humans? Get all of the perfect genes possible for war... Courage, strength, smarts, etc. to make perfect fighting machines. Half and half on topic with genetic manipulation but... Every technological advancement we make as a race, is just about ALWAYS somehow incorporated into war. So I see it that no matter what, if this were to happen, it would be applied to war. And it is a cruel thought, but (I think was said) war is population control. Imagine all the more people that would have been without wars. Especially the revolutionary war, the civil war, and WWI and WWII. So many more people. Also, genetic manipulation takes out Natural Selection. Now, everyone could survive. Eliminate diseases, anything that is bad for humans, and Natural Selection is out. Eventually it will catch up with us. The human race is only 1 generation from extinction. that comes to mind... but the really scary part, at least in my opinion, would be to make them to not question orders. to completely conform to every word and decree of their superior. i completely agree with you, snake, as far as population control. before disease catches up with us as a race though, we may do our planet in, as far as overpopulation, and pollution trying to support them. |

well think about it (sorry i have to quote star wars here). IN the star wars movies, the lame new ones not the kick ass old ones, they make the clone army. Those things are couragous and they obey orders without a second thought. So basically you have super human clones for an army... No matter how sick it would be, its an incredibly scary thing to think about. |

Clones... most people forget that they have feelings and think just how they original person would think so why would they go to war instead of living the life the 'template' would |

I've never had much interest in this topic, for some reason. I feel that if it's accessible, it should be pursued. For the argument on how it would cause overpopulation... What opinions do you have about the advancement of medicine? I would hope the same as genetic manipulation. Like I said before, it's not really an interesting topic to me. |

i feel that the advancement of medicine is completley necessairy. the population is contorled by many natural factors. War, (although i guess that isn't really natural). natural disasters, diseases and sicknesses, etc. If we having cloneing the population would stay in check or it might grow. however if we exceed in medicine advances that fix some of the most terrible and life-consuming diseases like cancer and AIDS then the population would go insane. |
