The other day on a drive from Seattle to LA, my grandpa was listen to a book on tape, set during WWII. It goes through a war scene. People are getting shot, and bleeding, and shot by there partners, and the main character is seeing his friends shot. We are being described this in detail. Later on in the book the character picks up a hooker. he takes her home, and a sex scene begins. My grandpa had to fast forward through this because he felt uncomfortable having me in the car and listening to this.

He brought up later on how messed up that is, that we could care less how much violence and blood and death we allow our kids to see, but then at the slightest mention of sex, we gasp and shield our kids. Any thoughts on this?

Read Skid's sig, the quote from George Carlin. He puts it well.

It is a complete travesty, in my opinion. Sexuality should be accepted, if not promoted in our society, while violence should be quelled. That's not the case, as we all know, as violence is glorified in everything from television, movies, and videogames. Not much of a thought, maybe I'll add more later.

I also agree. It was the same way with movies when i was younger. My parents would let me watch as peoples guts are spilling out of them (Black Hawk Down) and as they are saying every cus word available to man, then they would fast forward through the sex scenes. I would be like What the Fack and they would say im to younge. (That changed when my parents divorced as my dad lets me do wutever i want, but that is another subject).

In my opinion, two things make a movie or book. Sex and Violence. I know im being stereotypical but its true. movies would be boring as hell without these things. However, you have to have the willpower to see these things on tv or in books and know that they aren't always the right thing to do.

Also i think that the neglect of sex and the promotion of violence goes back to biblical days. Think about it. The bible says stuff about sex being bad until your married or what not (Im anti-religious, meaning i think religion is stupid. I dont worship the devil or anything so get that out of your mind.) However, violence has been glorified for as long as ppl remember.

George Carlin's got the right idea.
EXPOSE YOUR KIDS TO SEX AND VIOLENCE.
I was at a young age and I believe I'm better off with it...why? Because when I see it in real life it doesn't bother me.

That's far from the point. You should be exposed to know how to deal with it, not so it simply "doesn't bother us."

We're a desensitized society, and that is not a good thing.

That's what I essentially meant.
And yes, we're very desensitized. But we're much too soft on ourselves.

That is precisely what is wrong with the world these days... :(

Sex is taboo to many, whereas violence is everywhere and no-one seems to care. Same thing happens to me. I'm still in my childhood and when a sex scene comes on when my family and I are watching TV etc., my mum's reaction is to shield my eyes with a cushion and so on. But when I really think about it, it's part of everyday life yet, parents don't seem to think that violence would have the same influence if not worse.

So yeah, I agree that we're desensitised, but at least the intention is good.

Although Avsfreak, with respect I don't agree that sex and violence makes a film, but that's my opinion.

Couldn't have worded it better myself.

in my opinion, we have become desensitized to the wrong thing.

A while ago, my little brother was begging my parents to allow him to buy GTA. he begged, he pleaded... and my mother adamantly refused. why? not because you could mercilessly slaughter hundreds, not because the plot encouraged several felonies, or whatever you want to call them... but because the main character could pick up a hooker.
this made me laugh for quite a while.

Sex is part of human nature. how bad would a society where everyone was open about sexuality, where children are aware of where they come from, where a sex scene can go unnoticed, be?

I was told of a certain state in the us, where you could buy a gun, and legally walk around on the streets with it in your pocket... but owning any sexual paraphernalia, porn, or anything of the like was a crime.

I wouldnt mind if we were a bit more desensitized to sex... but we should be more sensitive to violence.

The news always has top stories of local murders. Front pages have bloody crime scene photos. this has become the norm. this is not something i agree with.
who knows, increased sensitivity could lead to a decrease in violence.
now wouldnt that be nice?

Google "porn" much? Rofl.
You don't seem like the partying type (not to mention you're like 12?). When do/have you see sex?

Wow...lots of great points here. I didn't expect this topic to be so popular. And, it seems like we all agree. Then again, I think the majority of us are teenagers =/ Maybe everyone else somehow sees it differently? I was flipping through one of my Monologue books the othr day, and there was one on this topic, i'll see if I can find it.

Contrary to a lot of your opinions, I believe that it is better to become desensitized to violence over sex. Sex should be left for the bedroom, even if it is natural. Violence, is an on-going problem that we should be able to co-exist without turning into pansies. With the increasing number of liberal idealistic views in society today, I am dissapointed to see that people are becoming more open with sexuality when it should rather be kept private and between two people rather than shared with the whole world.
