I guess I didn’t realize that people would come to my home. They came with cameras, lights, and microphones and all Leah could say was “shit”. She thought it was the news, a crew doing a story on a drug bust or something I did. Guess she thought me out to be a criminal. “Should I open it?” she asked. I just shook my head. Told her that they’d go away if we didn’t answer the door. Lied that they were just looking for some local story. I think they saw her face between the curtains and they ended up pitching camp for two hours. I had unplugged the phone and turned my cell phone on silent just so she wouldn’t know. Talk about dodging a bullet. --- Warped EMailed me later that night. They sent out a statement that I had obligations to live up to. We had to travel to Jersey and I had to fight a guy named Rico Calle. The whole business seemed weird I guess. I felt like a hitman for a few days and I followed a strict code of secrecy to compliment it. I was in and out of Jersey every week, but if I ended up with a black eye or a broken shoulder, Leah would be on my case in a second. It was how she showed her love. A hard smack across the head did the trick and it said that she cared for me. I left in the afternoon. We’d spent the night together beforehand and as she was leaving, I told her that I’d see her in a few days. Told her that I had business to wrap up out of town. She was fine with it. --- My car ride was long. It was me and my thoughts and all I could think about was Rico Calle. I didn’t know who he was, what he’d done, or what he wanted to do to me. I figured he’d want the money just as much as I did. I also figured he might have wanted more than that. Wrestling was a fanatic sport. It was one of those industries where people did it because they liked to put on a show and prove that they’re the best. In a ring with a guy like that, I stood no chance. Rico was probably faster than me. He was probably more experienced than me. He probably even loved the sport. All I had going for me was a continuous high and a desire to take home some paper. It was the paper that had the most push though. Leah mentioned Paris and I’d be damned if I didn’t take her there before the end of the year. Of course, that meant beating Rico Calle. It meant figuring out how to run off ropes and pick a guy up. I sure as hell wasn’t going to jump off things. I was afraid of heights. I could punch, but I didn’t quite know if punching was even legal in wrestling. It was a whole new world and on my way to New Jersey, it was all I could process. --- I killed a dear on the way in. The dear also totalled my car. Guess we were even. --- I was backstage before the show started when the cameras found me. They said they had been looking for me all week and that I needed to cut a promo. They said that I needed to say something about Rico and say it fast. My neck was still in pain from the deer crash, but I mustered up some words and just started talking. “I’ve been saying Rico Calle all the way from Philadelphia. Just the name. I’ve spelled it out, I’ve rhymed things with it, and I’ve wondered what I was supposed to do when I saw the face that went with the name. I guess I still won’t know until I see that face. Fact is, he could very well beat me into the ground and I wouldn’t know what hit me.” I stopped because the camera crew gave me a weird look. I guess I was doing it wrong. “Let me try again,” I said. “So Rico Calle. What a name.” I paused again, this time well aware that I was screwing this up worse than before. “I guess you wrestle and I guess you’re good.” I shook me head, “shit.” “Nerves on the first night?” asked a crew member. I told him it was something like that. “Just talk about what you’re going to do to him. Talk about what you’ve done in the past.” I nodded and went for it. “Rico Calle. I’m no one special. I’m just a guy who happened to get a gig at Warped. You’ve probably been wrestling longer than me, winning longer than me, and talking longer than me. Guess that makes this some kind of David and Goliath thing. I won’t lie and say that David will win. Goliath is no laughing matter. The guy’s huge. He’s good. He’s - well, he’s just better. David is that guy though. He’s that guy that just goes for it. I guess I’m David and I guess I’m just gonna’ go for it. You’ll probably crush me, but I might hit a swing that drops you on your ass. It could happen.” The camera crew didn’t want to be there - it was obvious. One yawned when I rambled on some more and then I smiled and they paid attention. I stopped talking for a second and just smiled into the camera. “Just don’t get caught laughing at me. I’ll knock your fuckin’ teeth down your throat quicker than you can tighten that smile.” They said I was good and they left me alone to a roll of tape and my bare wrists. I wrapped them like I thought they should be wrapped and leaned back on my chair wondering if Leah would ever see that shit show I somehow mumbled through. |
