You all signed up to spend a year in Japan and you can't tell me you only did that for CV purposes. What do you want to see/visit/experience while in Japan? |

That's a very good question! It will keep us busy while we are all waiting for the results ![]() As far as I'm concerned, I have many reasons: - I've been interested in Japan/the Japanese culture for quite a long time. I pretty much like everything about it, may it be the traditional or the modern culture. Being in Japan for 1 year is then the perfect opportunity to travel all around the country and really discover it! In terms of what I'd like to see... Let's say it ranges from the Mount Fuji to the Pachinko gaming rooms. Anything! - I want to learn Japanese! I'd really like to be fluent after a year so that I can understand Anime without subtitles! More seriously, I like learning new languages and I find Japanese definitely interesting. - And, last but not least, Japan is one of the technologically most advanced countries on this planet. Working in a Japanese company in my domain of specialisation is kind of a dream to me... I guess you can understand that ^^ I hope this is the kind of answer you were waiting for. Cheers, Manu |

I'm not really hoping for any answer. I'm just hoping you can all infect each other with new ideas and enthusiasm. I'm sure all of you know of Akihabara and Mt Fuji. All of you will want to see the snow monkeys and bathe in an onsen. But did you know there's still forges where you can see tamahagane and smiths who will let you watch while they make a real samurai sword? (You can take classes too, but you don't have the time) There's bound to be something one of you know and has been dying to do/see for years that others amongst you have no idea about. Sharing what you want to see can inspire others and you can, in turn, get great ideas of what to do with your free time you may have missed out on otherwise. Edited by Wally, 15 Mar 2010, 18:16.

Not mentioned yet it is the food. Huge fan of the food here. Can't wait to explore the regional delicacies rather than what just made it over to Europe. It's rare to find food which is so aesthetic as it is tasty. And healthy. Obviously not the only reason but it's certainly something to look forward to. |

Mmm that is really nice ![]() I actually mean it. I tried natto with an open mind, just like when I tried the Swedish specialty Surströmming first time (which I loved from the first bite, believe it or not). As it turned out I came to like natto as well. |

I spent some time in Japan a few years back and one thing I would do if I get to come back is to revisit some of the places I went to then out of nostalgia. I will go visit some old friends I have met around the world that live in Japan. Some have been exchange students at my university, some I met in Japan, some I just stumbled across at some point. Another thing is to visit a certain nature reserve I don't remember right now what its called, but its supposed to be located on the Izu peninsula. And while in the area, I think I would go to Atami, being such a classic resort. I can say I have some similar feelings as Wim Wenders, when he made "Tokyo-ga". I, just like he did, have fallen in love with Ozus films and I, just like he did, would like to go out exploring possible remnants of older eras of Japan. Also, being a cineast there are a few short films not available outside a very specific site in Mitaka I would like to see at some point (some of you might know exactly what I mean right now ).If its possible, I will go visit one or two of the great whisky distilleries of Japan, especially Yamazaki in Osaka. Some trivial things such as seeing Fuji-san with my own eyes (it was always shrouded in clouds and mist when I had the opportunity) is of course on my to-do list, but as mentioned before, that might not be the most interesting info... |

Haha it certainly isn't the most aesthetic dish but I had a good Japanese friend in high school. He introduced me to Natto and I loved it. Edited by Ezra, 16 Mar 2010, 22:01.

I just thought of something noone who ever spend an autumn in Tokyo should miss... The Halloween party on the Yamanote line. If you heard of it, you probably heard it being an urban myth or that it is a crazy night taking lap after lap on a train. Trust me, it might be the craziest train ride you will ever take. If you don't know what its all about, search for it on YouTube or similar. Edited by GND, 23 Mar 2010, 03:26.

Me too.. and i think it will be a short list, something like "you MUST see this or we'll never talk to you again" with a section of "you MUST bring back these or we'll never talk to you again" ![]() While travelling i dislike detailed plans* and love to learn on site what's to see in the surroundings, and i think i'd do the same in Japan... no matter what you see it'll be always great! btw over the past weeks i lost myself wandering in vucanians blogs (like Wally's, one of the most fascinating ;)) and i'm sure they'd become sort of a travel guide to me. * once my plan was: a plane ticket to stockholm, a plane ticket from stockholm 3 weeks later and an interrail ticket; no wonder we had to sleep in bedrolls in Helsinki

Culture, food, people, environment, everything! by the way, Tokyo has one of the best (#3 or #4 place in the world) club called WOMB. Maybe someone has visited it ?

Oh yeah, I saw Carl Cox perform there. Nice place. Girls danced in their bras (and my other vulcanus-jin were too scared to go talk to them) |

Ezra, I couldn't have said it better! I'm not ashamed to admit that food is one of my top five reasons for wanting to live in Japan for (at least) a year...well, food is always a good reason for everything I guess (what can I say...I'm a gourmand! ) Not to mention that if I recall correctly, the number of different KitKat flavors that have been released in Japan is around 80! And that includes some very inspired ones, like soy sauce, wasabi (of course), jacket baked potato with butter, camembert cheese, red beak soup...(red beak soup?? I'm hoping that was a misspelling of red bean soup...'cause that would make more sense, right?? ) But anyway, I digress. The rest of my desired experience have been also mentioned before-the culture, language, work experience, people, betting on how many people can fit into an already packed metro car (ok maybe not that one), the bright lights, funky product packaging (??), ...could go on for ever. |

If you want to experience a sardine can train I would suggest to the outbound den-en-toshi line for chuo-rinkan around 5 to 7 in the afternoon... That will probably satisfy your need
