Teens targeted in net safety push

Half of Europe's teenagers browse the web with no parental oversight or supervision, a survey suggests.

The research into the web habits of 20,000 14 to 19-year-olds across Europe found that 51% enjoy unfettered access to any and every website.
The MSN research also found that 29% of the teenagers it quizzed have suffered bullying while using the web.
It comes as the EC marks Safer Internet Day with pledges from 17 social sites to do more to protect younger users.
"We were surprised that it's over 50% without any parental control," said John Mangelaars, head of Microsoft's consumer and online divisions in Europe.

The popularity of social networking sites such as Bebo, MySpace and Facebook among youngsters has helped them become sophisticated web users, said Mr Mangelaars.

What do you guys think about this? My parents used to use McAfee parental controls, but I don't really think any of my friends are cursed with them.
However when we got a new computer and my parents settled for Windows parental controls. I got onto one of their accounts one time and changed
the settings so that it doesn't block every other page on forums like these.

I Lol'd at the online bullying thing. I dunno how that always comes up, honestly if someone is "bullying" me online, I could care less. And no way I'm giving anyone
more information one where I live on than I live in Washington, good luck finding me in 76,000 square miles. I have a myspace and a facebook, and both are set to private.

Do you have parental controls on your computer limiting what you do? Would you support proactive work to reduce teen viewing of "inappropriate websites"?

I don't have any parental control on my internet and I'm glad. My parents trust that I will stay away from any inappropriate, which I do not.

I agree and disagree with this. If some random person on the Internet starts trying to bully me, I can and will ignore it. I will never meet them again, and can deal with it. However, most internet bullying is done by those who know the victim. Cruel comments and pictures can be posted on the Internet for the whole world to see. Worse can be fake blogs. A blog written by the bully, where they pretend to be the victim. They can cause a whole lot of trouble with these - making people hate the victim, and losing them friends. This is the type of bullying I hate.
