Well first up, what's your recording situation gonna be? Do you want to just record a band stood in a room? Want to record yourself practising? What? To be honest there's not much point getting a mixer if you aren't going to be recording more than one instrument at a time; which may sound obvious but I know a lot of people don't realise it :P They tend to be useless hooked up to a PC anyhow, because most do just that- MIX the signals so you won't be able to adjust levels or EQ tracks after they have been recorded. It just depends what you're actually intending to record. An all-in-one unit and a few mics will be better for a band situation, but will cost more; whereas if you're just wanting to do something by yourself, like me, you can get away with one mic and an audio interface. |

I'd like to have the chance to record more than one track at a time, though I'm not certain wheter I'll need it or not. But how much do I have to pay for a good enough audio interface? This is the mixer I've been thinking of and I it's not too expensive for me either so I guess I might as well just buy it instead of an audio interface; http://www.dv247.com/invt/32398/ |

If that mixer funtions as an interface, it'll do you fine. Basically you need it to be able to monitor and record with zero latency. I know there are some out there that only record and don't function as an actual sound card, so look out for that. That usually means lag as the recording source and sound processing source are different. |

So do interfaces function as a sound card as well? I know a friend who knows a bit more of this shit than me, and he said that that's a pretty good mixer. |

Yeah, that's the whole idea of it. Bypasses your computer's sound and speakers, and you plug your monitors/headphones into the interface. This way there is no latecy. Mixers definitely function OK for recording, but don't usually have playback monitoring, so you can end up with wierd lag issues and what have you. When you're only recording one orrtwo tracks at a time, I wouldn't reccomend a mixer. A mixer would be useful if all you wanted to do is hit record and lay everything down in one take, if you're a DJ, or if you were recording old-skool stye on to tape; but they're not the most useful tools when hooked up to a PC. Go look up a Creative E-MU 0202 or 0404 and look at the feeatures. If the mixer has similar capabilities it will be fine. If not, go for a dedicated recording interface. |

Well, it seems that the Creative E-MU 0202 is a bit simpler to use than the mixer, am I right? I'm not sure how the mixer would perform with the sound card in my computer and I'm not too willing to take the risk, if that interface works as a soundcard as well. Besides, I would do fine with only being able to record one thing at a time to tell you the truth. Cheers for the help. |
