Opeth thread time, there' sbound to be a couple fans of these prog maestros here in the Thrasherhood. So, let's discuss.

I loved Watershed, thought it was brilliant, very progressive, but it doesn't get too prog for its own good - unlike Dream Theatre, for instance - and the addition of Fred Akesson from Arch Enemy has given them a more technical edge, with fucking great guitar solos on each song.

Also, I'M SEEING OPETH IN NOVEMBER! Anyone in the South West, come to Bristol on 21st, have a miniature thrasherhood meet up.

watershed=win. when i write a song, i try to make it as complex and usually play around with time signatures alot. after listening to watershed, i got it around in my thick head that if your going to write a song, why not make it unique rather than just sawing the E string?

I usually get lynched for my opinions on Opeth, but here I am probably safe.

As good as they are, I think Opeth's biggest downfall is the fact that they are Opeth. Everything they makes is Opeth. It's got such a distinctive style it kinda works against itself. It would be wrong to say all their material sounds identical; they have moved in a new direction in recent years.

However, I do think it's true to say, Opeth's material is all pretty similar. It's good, and it is very diverse, but it's just all the same at the same time. I can't explain it.

It's just that there are only so many ways you can play jazzy clean intros, followed by a chugging death riff in a satisfying yet reasonably low gain toan, followed by Akefeldt's roars, followed by clean singing, followed by a clean section...

Opeth are just too Opethy for their own good.

Yeah, but Watershed is still just amazing. A more varied album that the other stuff they've released.

I don't mean that, I mean that the songs sound different to each other and different to other Opeth albums, the introduction of a fuckton of good soloing helps, too.

Yeah, that's true.

I suppose I'm just not too fond of the general direction of Watershed and Ghost Reveries.

If they kept the song structure and technicality of Still Life and Morningrise, but with the ripping shred they have begun indulging in on Watershed, I'd be a very happy bunny. Rat.

I maintain that Damnation is a waste of megabytes.

I think Watershed has a much different sound to Ghost Reveries, more of a death metal - yet classic rock sound to it. Ghost Reveries had a slightly more mainstream gloss production to it - quite typical of Roadrunner Records, actually.
