Thrashcore/Crossover

The word thrash, back in the late 70s and very early 80s, actually meant skate. Thrashcore emerged out of hardcore punk (Black Flag, Bad Brains, etc), and essentially was spead up hardcore punk. It's considered a fore-runner of grindcore, and listening to bands like D.R.I., it's easy to see why.

The distinction between thrashcore and crossover DOES exist, but it's very blurry (for me at least). Thrashcore is pretty much sped up hardcore. Thrash Metal is pretty much speed metal + thrashcore, and crossover is stuff that is too metal to be called thrashcore, and too punk to be called thrash metal.

Examples of thrashcore include:
Siege, early the Accused, early Corrosion Of Conformity, S.O.B., Larm

Examples of crossover include:
Cryptic Slaughter, Nuclear Assault, Stormtroopers Of Death, Suicidal Tendencies

Crust
Crust is an 'evolution of anarcho-punk' that developed in the UK in the early to mid 80s. While typically being fast, it occassionally features slower tempos. Vocals are shouted, and the guitar-work is similar to extreme metal, but simpler, with the bass featuring more prominently.

Examples of early crust include:
Napalm Death demos, Amebix, and Nausea

Prominent crust bands:
Hellkrusher, Extinction Of Mankind, Doom

Grindcore
Grindcore is an evolution of crust punk that is often confused with death metal (and vice versa). Despite bearing similarities to death metal, the two are very different. The guitars are heavily distorted, often down-tuned, and the riffage is punk-influenced (the major distinction between death metal and grindcore). Songs rarely last longer than two minutes and are known to be only seconds long.

Examples of grindcore bands include:
Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Repulsion, Nausea (US), Prophecy Of Doom, Regurgitation, Sore Throat, Unseen Terror

That pretty much raps it up :)

Examples of power violence bands include:
Infest, Fuck On The Beach, Capitalist Casualties, Dropdead

OK, that's pretty much all I listen to in hardcore, and I hope these (very brief) descriptions help. You pretty much have to listen to these genres to understand them, but look into the bands I mentioned in the examples.

Nuclear Assault are pretty good, although they're a bit... odd.

Surely this thread should be in the thrash section?
