There will be a difference in the Vols defense this season. It will not be much faster than the defense in the past, but it will sure look like it id ==s faster when you watch them this season. Why is that? I was listening to a segment on the 104.5 Wake-Up Zone yesterday and it discussed how the Vols defense last season was good but it featured a lot of free lancing in the scheme and layers trying to make the plays. Not a bad thing, but something that sometimes puts the defender out of position and makes the defense look slower to react. Shop's defense will be about pressure and with a lot of movement along the front to disguise where the pressure is coming from and to confuse the opposing offense. However, the defenders, once they see an alignment and read their keys, will have a place to go to and will be taught to go to that spot and not deviate and not try to hot dog to make a play. They will be taught to trust what the guy next to them is doing and that that guy will be in his proper place. The coaches will drill it it in their heads that they have designed this defense and have built in mechanisms of pursuit in an area if one guy is taken out by a blocker. At all times you are not to deviate. That will make our defense look and play faster. We will see a lot of press coverage on the corners and one deep safety with teams trying to throw over the top, but that is where your pass rush has to help you. It s going to be fun watching the speed on this defense. |

I can't wait to see this. In my opinion, the best DC who was at Tennessee was the Chief and I didn't think he was all that good. |

Our safeties are much faster at least with game speed. I am still worried about DT depth. Right now we have McKenzie, O'Brien and Vickers who are healthy and have had extensive game experience. I really believe I would have to move Kongbo inside and give him a look. |

DT depth is my main concern as well. That and depth at MLB. |

They have Picou, a true DT and then Butcher, Mixon and Kongbo who can also line up inside on certain groupings. I also I believe I heard Shoop say he might line up with four defensive ends on the line of scrimmage in obvious passing downs. |

I am interested in Picou, but Butcher can't get healthy and Mixon didn't do much early inside. I believe Mixon wanted to play DE, but may not have a choice with Kongbo and Phillips playing. I do hope Shoop has some vision and some sense especially with Phillips. You don't put a guy with a bum shoulder inside to rush. |
