Time For Butch To Wear Big Boy Pants

Some posters on VQ are upset that greg McElroy said that he noticed in watching tape that on their down, Butch almost always runs draws, screens, fares, etc…. and with that kind of conservative 3rd down play calling, will get us another 9 win season. He said that Butch needs to trust Dobbs to throw the ball down the field and let our WRs make plays.

Of course, our homers got upset, but they have no clue about football offenses. My current pet peeves are the statement made "Why play into a defenses strengths, when we can play into our offensive strength" and "our offensive line could no protect". Both are wrong statements and excuses for not making the right calls.

Here is my response:
Quote:

* Who recruited our offensive linemen that were on the team in 2015?It was not like they they were only recruited by the Maryville Colleges of the world. Our offensive linemen were recruited by some good schools.

* Did we play against schools with inferior talent that we had on the offensive line in 2015? Why of course we did. Did many of those teams do a better job of pass protecting than our guys did? In many cases yes and many cases no. How many of them had to face defensive ends the caliber of Barnett? The bottom line is that our offensive line is nowhere as bad as many want to believe it was or is.

* Do we run a similar offense to what Clemson runs? Why are our results so different? Most will point to their QB. He is good, but he is not a great passer. He keeps plays alive with his feet, but he is not an overly fast QB breaking off long jaunts. His key is that he works hard to stay in the pocket as long as he can. Why does he do that?

* Weren't some of our WRs recruited by Clemson? They were coveted by many other SEC schools, but at UT they struggle to get the ball. Why is that? Think it may have to do with a couple of variables such as the route tree? QB staying in the pocket? The pocket is a safe place and our pocket was fine last year for the most part. The QB just has to learn to not panic and step up into the pocket instead of running at the first sign of pass rush. Both are coaching related are they not? Who is responsible for the route tree that we use? Who coaches our QBs? Who made the decision on who coaches our QBs?

* In the games that we lost, we had opportunities to pick up very attainable first downs that would have kept our offense on the field and keep our defense off of the field. Instead of running plays that would give us a real chance to pick up the first downs,, the coaching staff chose to run plays that had very little chance of picking up first downs. In fact a couple of them were designed to do nothing but run a few seconds off of the clock and ensure that we did not fumble before punting. Is that aggressive football?

People want to talk about a game, but forget that the game is made up of situations. There are key situations in every game that determine the outcome. How did our players and staff do in those key situations? Did our staff put our players in position to fully utilize their skills and abilities to play to their potential in this much discussed key situations. Why no they did not. A coach has to trust his players more than this staff trusted it's players in 2015. You don't ride around Daytona or Indy in a world class car slamming your brakes all around the track on and expect to win big games.

I know that some want to wear their orange colored glasses regarding the job that Butch has done. He has filled the cupboards full of talent, but he has made some decisions that lead to poor outcomes in 2015.All coaches will make bad decisions every once in a while, but these occurred in almost every close game.

Burning Man, 2009 FOREVER

UT was very good on 3rd down last season @ 46%, which was 20th in the country and I think around 2nd in the SEC.

That's not terrible.

Key situations in big game is what counts. What we did against Vandy and Missouri do not matter.
