UT Settles Title IX Lawsuit for $2.48 Million

I'm not a happy camper. Why give money to blackmailers?

As I understand it , half comes from utad and half from utk campus , assuming the deal is approved. Wonder how much the attornies get ? D o the plaintiffs have to pay taxes on their proceeds ?

I'd say around 33% to the lawyers. Which would leave around $200,000 each

Is it split equally ?

Good move by UT. The amount they settled for is peanuts compared to what they would 'have paid if they lost. Even if they won, they would lose money. Plus, the bad publicity wasn't worth the fight.

I think it's worse publicity by them buying their way out of it. Over $4,000,000 now paid out over the last 2 years to settle sexually related lawsuits - and they didn't contest any of them in court. That gives the perception of guilt.

No way its worse publicity. The news will linger a few days and be gone. A prolonged suit would be a negative reflection on UT for years with the possibility of losing the case. It's a good chance that we are guilty because of the many changes they are making to the monitoring of these situations. When you take on the Feds, chances are good you lose.

It makes us look guilty on one end. On the other end, we would have won this lawsuit, but the cost for legal fees over the next two years was going to be close to $6 million. It was not going to trial until 2018 and that is two more years of coaches using this against UT.

The fact that UT only paid out $2.48 million says a lot about the there sides willingness to settle and realization that they would not have won the lawsuit the end.

I think the main negative is that others may view UT as an easy mark.

Jones comment about being a "traitor" could have been a partial factor in the settlement. Being deposed he may have had a problem explaining himself about the comment. It would of been a distraction during the season, which the team did not need.

The very last place the University of Tennessee wants to see a head football coach is under oath in a courtroom.

1) Probably 40% + expenses.

2) No. Compensatory damages are not income and are thus not subject to taxation. Generally speaking, you really only have to worry about tax issues when the damages include lost wages, but this is a Title IX claim not a Title VII claim.
