Utah State is walking in to a buzzsaw.

(Posted this on OM, figured I would share it here also)

I know all about their near giant killer status, I have read their message board and heard the opinions of their fans. They aren't intimidated by big crowds, seen it before, Auburn, Wisky, USC, yada yada yada. These guys really are full of themselves for program with their resume. Yes, they have scared some big schools, but they were flying under the radar, and caught Auburn and USC at the perfect time. They caught Auburn off guard, post Cam, and they were suffering from a BCS title hangover. USC had so much shit going on internally that they couldn't have been focused on the game. They had all but quit playing for Kiffin.

They will have none of those things working for them Sunday. They will not be taken lightly by players, coaches,or fans. The element of surprise is gone. The players and the fans have had it drilled into our heads all summer that these guys could derail the season before it gets started. Butch has been pushing the freshman to the brink and beyond to get them ready, the veterans are craving redemption for past failures. Neyland is sold out and will be in rivalry mode for this game. A night game gives fans all day to get revved up on liquid enthusiasm.

They have never seen anything like what awaits them Sunday night. About 105,000 football starved, redemption crazed, big orange faithful are going to unleash their fury on USU. Our team will be as focused on this game as they will be for Oklahoma. These boys want to be big time? They are about to get it. Prime time Sunday, on the banks of the Tennessee River, the sleeping giant begins to stir from his slumber.

It is time to put how poor our program is, behind us. We may be young in some areas, but we are a talented team that is only going to get better in steps. Those steps will be small in the won loss column due to our schedule, however, you will see the Vols much more competitive speed-wise.

I don't see Utah State having the athletes to hang with us.

I hope to see the team feed off the crowd and the crowd feed off the play on the field back and forth until it sounds like the mid-90s Neyland.

Burning Man, 2009 FOREVER

Hopefully so, but man...we are playing a LOT of freshmen on D. Tons of actual talent but this team is as green as any we have fielded in recent memory.

Does talent trump experience? We are about to find out with this team.

Buzzsaw is a good description. And, you are right that Utah State isn't going to sneak up on Tennessee. I have a lot of fear that our defense is going to be porous, but I think that everyone from the head coach to the student assistants have their eyes wide open for this opponent.

UT announced that the game is a sellout ... last time we had an opening day sellout was in 2007 against #12 Cal.

It's going to rain at some point in the game and from what I have seen on the weather maps, it could be heavy rain at that.

Feed Hurd and let him pound them.

The most sucessful offenses the Vawls have run involved coming to the line with 2 play calls. If 8 in the box, throw;if 7 or less , run.

No lie. My brother has a good friend who coaches at a high level in Texas high schools. His teams run a read option offense and has 2 plays in the playbook and run each of them to either side. They have won at least 10 games each of the past 4 seasons doing so.

The ticket demand for this game is higher than I've seen in a long time. Stubhub prices are above $70 for seats in the upper South endzone (face is $40). Unreal.

The performance of the Penn State offense this morning is what I fear Tennessee will look like. Basically, Hackenberg has 3-4 seconds to get that ball out of his hands until the D-line breaks through. Hackenberg has been scrambling all game.
