Here's my 2014 opinion of teams that are on the rise, and teams that are on the decline.

East
  • Going up: Florida will take the biggest step up (there's nowhere to go but up). Tennessee is also a team on the rise, though not by much. I think Kentucky is also a team on the rise, and their 16 returning starters may be the surprise team of the SEC.
  • Heading down: Missouri and Vanderbilt will likely take the biggest falls, and Vandy fans are going to be blindsided by this fact (they don't seem to appreciate how Franklin lifted that program ... a new coach, few returning starters, and a switch to a 3-4 will doom them). Georgia seems like a team in chaos to me, and I expect a mildly lower year for them.

West
  • Going up: Alabama, with all that talent, is not going to repeat the sluggishness of 2013. Even with their Kiffen VD, they should dominate the West this year. I'm trying to figure out of Ole Miss was real last year - I fear that they are, and their rise will continue. TAMU has had a talent influx, and even without Johnny Football I suspect that they will do better this year.
  • Heading down: Auburn. They hit their head on the ceiling last year ... they will still do well, but will slightly falter. Missy State will not go bowling.

On my Vandy observation, I would also like to add that they are very poorly conditioned and slow. They were blown off the line by Temple and didn't have the strength to hold onto footballs. It is one thing to lose to a much lesser team by a few points - all major programs do that - but to be steamrolled in one's own house looks like the season is already over. The icing on this dung pile was that Mason pulls his starting QB in the second quarter ... the same QB that won the job after a heated 4 week battle, and now they are back to the starting gate with a QB leadership controversy.

This is much worse than I had even forecasted. Before the game, and ESPN commentator said that he expected Vandy to be 0-8 in the SEC. They could very well be 2-10 overall.

Added to that, their recruiting (already in a tailspin), could be akin to classes in the early 2000's, and lose everything that Franklin had built.

Give it a few games, but a 1-and-done for Mason doesn't seem out of the question. I am shocked at how poorly Vanderbilt looked ...

I don't know how you can put "good" and "Arkansas" in the same posting without some form of "not"
