Cuonzo Martin: When To Fish or Cut Bait?

What is Cuonzo Matin's future?

This is his third season at UT. Despite having successful SEC league play records each of the past three seasons, he has yet to get the Vols into the NCAA Tournament with good talent. This year, the verdict is still out on whether he can get our team into the Big Dance, although the chances are tapering off.

Think about after last season's disappointing snub from the NCAA Tourney. The Vols play some nobody in the NIT in front of a scant crowd in TBA and lose in the first round for the second year in a row. Martin's agent presses Dave Hart for a raise and a contract extension. Hart gave him the raise but not the contract extension.

What happens if we do not make the NCAA Tournament again this year and go to the NIT and lose early once again? You know that Martin;s agent will press for a contract extension once again. To not give him the extension this time truly makes Cuonzo Martin a lame duck in recruiting and coaching. The talent spigot will be cut off because the recruits will believe that Martin will not be around for their time at the school that Martin has recruited them to play at.

You stand to do more damage to the program by bringing back a lame duck coach and playing the 4th season under Martin, albeit with inferrer talent than his past three teams have had. This scenario lends itself to ripping the program up and crippling it ala the football program.

No matter who coaches the Vols next season,, we will bring back a team that lacks the strength and power under the basket and will lack the scoring ability that this years team has. It will not be a pretty team to watch next season and the results are not likely to be good.

So when do you fish or cut bait?

True dat- His buyout this year is less and should be affordable, we are not going to the NCAA. Even if we are a bubble team the committee will look and see a style of play that sux, an underachieving team at best a one and done. They will not take Tennessee and that is only IF we are a bubble team. We missed our opportunities,

ZO GOTS TO GO !!!!! MOST DEFINITELY

THAT IS ALL.....

Looking at the returning players for next year, I don't see any way that they can have a winning record. If Cujo is back, it will be a Wade Houston type disaster. He's a good human being but that does not make him a good basketball coach. He needs to be released, paid off and let someone else start rebuilding the program. (Sound faimilar, see football).

Tennessee isn't a premier basketball school, but there's really no reason why we shouldn't be in the tournament most every year.

Oh, there's more answers to this problem than "hire back Pearl".

this was the prevailing sentiment pre Pearl. It was considered accepted truth that the Tenn mens'BB job was a coach killer. Bruce put an end to that. If not Bruce now, then who?

If not Bruce now, then who?
There's not another quality basketball coach in the whole world that wouldn't want to coach a team with a multi-million dollar contract, modern arena, and top tier training facilities?

Actually, that is correct. Again, pre Pearl, we were turned down by multiple coaches including Kevin Stallings, who later signed with Vanderbilt.

If there is no quality coach that would come to Tennessee, then there is no point in dismissing the current coach.

Cut Fish....er....bait. We will have some talent next year...but it will be very young. Martin's coaching style does not seem to instill energy or confidence and we can't wait three years for him to develop the youngsters if he can at all.

If we lose Stokes, we'll be greener than a gourd in the post....but with the right coach, we'll have enough talent to compete....

I was serious when I asked for suggestions, cause Bruce might not be willing to come back. Interesting enough, one of the reasons we fired Bruce is that we couldn't go to the Ncaa tournement with him as coach, lol

The tea leaves I read tell me that Bruce to UT is in the same genre as Gruden to UT: wishful thinking.

My point is that there are options other than Pearl. I don't have any names, but I also didn't think Butch Jones was a homerun hire at the time. So, I am admitting ignorance.
