Class of 2015 QB Torrance Gibson

Torrance Gibson tweeted last night that he had changed his date for his announcement. He is at "The Opening" with several other recruits and many of the younger UT fans were heavily speculating that this was great news for Tennessee and that because he was going to be with Kahlil McKenzie, that they would do a dual announcement to UT in July.

However, Brent Hubbs from VolQuest and Ryan Callahan from 247 rained on their self-made parade.

I think some Tennessee fans might be getting a bit too excited about Gibson.

As I've said, I think a number of teams have some serious concerns about him right now. It's going to be interesting to see what happens with his recruitment over the next couple of months.

The red flags regarding Gibson aren't things that would show up on his Twitter account or anything like that.

I'm not really in a position to discuss the details of what Gibson has and hasn't done or anything like that. All I can tell you is that the concerns about him are serious enough that multiple programs that have been involved with him either have taken a step back in recruiting him or are seriously considering doing so.

Again, I'm not really in a position to discuss the details of what Gibson has or hasn't done. But I do think it's at least possible that Tennessee ultimately could back off Gibson. It's a somewhat tricky situation for the Vols, considering that Gibson is involved with a number of their other current targets, and completely backing off Gibson might leave a sour taste in the mouths of some of the guys he knows. But I would not consider him one of UT's top targets at this point, if that makes sense. — Ryan Callahan

Gibson's thread on VN should be renamed, "The Trail of Tears".

The thread is full of emotional college kids hanging on the sack of a kid, who has a lot of baggage and is not ready to play QB in the SEC in any shape or form.

Ha, ha, not just Vol Nation, on Hubbs' board too. All some of these football ignorant fans can see is star ratings. I still believe Gibson might develop into a fine wide receiver at the next level. Reading between the lines from the statements you posted, sure looks like UT may have backed off this kid. The team has bigger immediate needs than to sign what would probably be a project, no matter what position he plays and then you will also have to call on Antone Davis to keep a close eye on him when he is not in the football facility.

My thinking is that he isn't a QB at the next level, but (like you say) a WR. Tennessee is likely taking no more than 3 WR in this class, and we have one in the fold, Jefferson seems to be a lean, and we have several others that are listening.

Have you heard why we may be backing off or not recruiting him as hard as we once were?

The only thing I've read is a rumor that he is letting it be known that he will play for the team that pays ... sounds like a wild rumor, but that's the only smoke I've seen. And, supposedly, all the SEC teams have cooled.

Well, except, of course, Auburn.

CBJ takes 2 QBs.

Callahan's quotes were posted and seemed to point to UT was not pressing for TG.

Hubbs quotes were posted shortly after saying the same thing.

TSR guys saying TG to UT is not happening.

Now Matthews flat out says UT will NOT take his commitment.

Gibson has moved his announcement date to early October ... Fortenberry (VolQuest) says that the Vols are still recruiting him, but (with two candidate QB's committed) not as intensely.

I hear that there isa lot of caution being exercised by the staff on TG, stemming from his long visit to Knoxville in early June.

Mike Farrell on Gibson:
Quote:

Hearing that Gibson is a take as an ATH but not as a QB for the Vols and the kid thinks he's Joe Montana so I don't see this ever happening. We've had many questions about whether or not he can be a quarterback in any offense that resembles pro style in any way and we don't think he can so while Gibson may tell people the Vols are all over him, it's not for QB.
This backs upo much of what Doug Matthews has been telling people.

Gibson has named Tennessee as his leader……again. According to Hubbs, Tennessee is going to give Gibson a thorough going over and inspection of his baggage before moving forward.
