If you are a senior trying t up your stock in the NFL Draft, The senior Bowl is the best place to do just that.

it is a week of practices with NFL coaches teaching you NFL techniques and NFL arches, General Mangers and NFL scouts 6 feet away watching you and interviewing you all week long. They don;t even stick around to watch the game nor do they care about what happens in the game. PRACTICE IS EVERYTHING.

4. Ja’Wuan James, OT, Tennessee
James improved quite a bit in his senior season, deepening his initial bucket step off the snap and holding a square, wide base to utilize his length more effectively. He still tends to click his heels or cross over while mirroring edge rushers, but his redirect laterally remains a big time plus for evaluators. James rarely secures a dominant inside fit with his hands and doesn’t wow with strength right away, but he does an excellent job of running his feet and holding ideal base width to finish blocks. Always an impressive tools player with the foot speed, length and natural power you look for, he appears to be flexible throughout his frame and will be an enticing developmental left tackle prospect in the latter portion of the top 100 picks.

7. Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee
Anytime you’re as large and as situationally dominant as Daniel McCullers, teams are going to be intrigued. But, for the past two seasons, he hasn’t done much to ease team’s motor, consistency, and motivation concerns he’s had. Team’s will be looking for him not to be too “sloppy” at the weigh-in, appear to hold his weight well enough, flash during the week in over-powering in one-on-one situations, and see if he can remain consistent throughout the entire week of practice.

Monday Practice Notes.

We are learning why Ju'Wuan James never blossomed into the super star he was coming out of high school.

Being in shape was not Mac's problem. Consistent effort was. He has a chance today and Wed to dominate the C/G in the one on one drills. Robert Ayers made a lot of money with a good SR yr and a great SR Bowl practice where no one could block him one on one.

James is on the South squad and most of the good DEs are are on the North. However, there is Chris Smith and Dee Ford. Ford is a smallish DE and will probably play 3-4 OLB, but will be a great challenge for James.

Both UT players can make some money the next 48hrs. Thank you for the info.

Knee sprain knocks Tennessee OL Ja'Wuan James out of the Senior Bowl. Won't practice, won't play.

James lost out on an opportunity to rise in the Draft. He is not better than a 6th round pick at this point.

He was being looked at as a left offensive tackle in the league. I think know some team will pick him up and try him out at right tackle.

Gil Brandt said he had a chance to move up to 3rd round with good performance. Scouts did see him for a day and he has 4 yrs of tape which is important. He could end up being a swing guy who could help at RT, RG and LG. He could have a long career if able to stay healthy.

Wesley Johnson from Vandy is another of that ilk. I thought he played really well the last 2 yrs. I don't believe he gave up a sack his JR yr. Somebody is going to get a dang good lineman probably cheap.

I forgot to add that Big Mac made some points yesterday. Greg Williams was on NFL on sirius and talked about him. Said he played better on the left side than the right side, that he actually shot a gap by getting "skinny" which he couldn't believe with his size. Williams said he thought he could play LDE in a 3-4, which I hadn't even considered and he actually got down low so he didn't get leveraged by the double team.

On the right side he did not do so well. All the things he did on the right side, he didn't do on the left. Williams said he was viewed as a 2 down player, which we have discussed before.

Maybe the move to DT-3 tech may pay off for the Mac. I certainly hope so.

A lot of 3-4 teams and 4-3 teams are trying to be more versatile and give QBs and OCs more to think about and prepare for. Defensive schemes are moving away from the double-gappoing 3-4 DL and moving to disguised 4-3 fronts with one gap respnosibilities. Soime two gap on one side and two gap on the other side. They are doing all that they can to confides the linemen.

If McCullers can show that he can shoot the gap a bit and can two gap when needed, he will have a job for several years. As you said, can he start the motor and keep it running?

Wednesday practice notes. http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/SeniorBowl/reports/Practices/South-Wednesday.php

There isn’t a more imposing physical specimen in this class than Tennessee DT Daniel McCullers but the big guy has struggled a bit this week. Despite that rare size McCullers is awfully stiff and offers very little from a pass rush perspective, which could limit him to a two-down role and put a ceiling on how high he could potentially come off the board

Some interesting comments about the players at the Senior Bowl…..

* Some Packers scouts have said Taj Boyd is not even draftable.

* Derek Carr is the best QB at the Senior Bowl by far, but others say he is not 1st round material.

Three NFL scouts compare this draft class's QBs with the QBs in the 2011 NFL Draft.

According to three general managers who have a serious interest in what happens with the quarterbacks, passers such as Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr and Johnny Manziel may not end up going as quickly as many draftniks have suggested.

Quote:

And the most damning analysis came Tuesday morning when one of them said: “This group is reminding me a lot of the first round in 2011, except there’s no Cam Newton.”

Yet, there is some belief that the difference between the quarterbacks perceived to go at the top of the first round and the ones who are likely to be in the second or third round is so small that waiting is wise. Players such as A.J. McCarron, Aaron Murray, Zach Mettenberger, David Fales and James Garoppolo are expected to be in that group later in the draft.

Quote:

“The difference between all those guys is about this much,” one of the GMs said, holding his forefinger and thumb about a half-inch apart. “If that’s how you see it, why not wait?”

Furthermore, Bortles, Bridgewater, Carr and Manziel each have their issues. There are con-cerns about Bortles’ accuracy, Bridgewater’s lack of size and quiet personality, Carr’s pocket pres-ence and Manziel’s personality.

Maybe the QBs, but the NFL personnel guy must not be looking at he OLs and DLs on the North. Take a look at those guys. Usually the Sr Bowl has a lot of 2nd day guys, but there are some possible 1st rounders on the DL--Hageman, Donald, Murphy and OL-Henderson, Martin, Thomas.

The NFL tells the event runner, Phil Savage, who they want to look at. Savage is good about picking Alabama college players, but after that it is all business. McCarron pulls out and they get Garoppolo to take his place b/c he just showed out at the east-west game.

There are some dang good players there. Maybe not top 10 draft picks, but a good bit of 2nd thru 7th rounders who the NFL is built on. Maybe he saw the North QBs throw and threw up his hands.

Looks like the smoke blowing is rampant in Mobile. You usually have to wait to the combine for that.

Senior Bowl's Biggest Winners and Losers
Quote:

Tajh Boyd, QB Clemson

In the not-too-distant past, Boyd was considered a Top 10 pick. He went on to have a tremendous season, but areas of his game were questioned.

The two biggest issues with Boyd are anticipation and ball placement.

Due to Clemson’s wide-open offense, it became clear in Mobile, Boyd isn’t comfortable throwing to a spot. He looks for wide receivers to get open before he wants to unleash a pass.

There is also a built-in excuse for all quarterbacks participating in the Senior Bowl that they’re not accustomed to throwing to the receivers in attendance. Yet, Boyd’s ball placement was poor even in drills. Receivers continually had to adjust to his throws.

Boyd clearly is no longer a first-day pick. The question now is whether he’ll even be selected in the second or third rounds.

http://q.usatoday.com/2014/01/23/biggest-winners-losers-senior-bowl-tajh-boyd-aaron-donald/

Those questioning Kiffin about not pushing for Boyd and thinking he would beat Bray out, had better rethink that thought. It was not going to happen.

Boyd played in an offense that was suited for him. He would have struggled in our pro set offense.

The zone read offense is going to hurt professional football. Getting more athletic QBs is great for this offense, but it will not work quite that well in the NFL.
