Great win yesterday against Tennessee Tech. They played us close in the first half, hitting a lot of threes, but we extended our defense in the second half and stopped that shit cold. Another great game by Stokes, he's a double double machine. And I think Thompson might be our starting point guard by the beginning of league play, with Barton spelling him at times at the point, and also playing some 2. We are a much better team with Thompson in the game, he finds the open players. |

Barton had zero assists yesterday....he's really not a point guard imo. Thompson is...but yesterday wasn't one of his better games. I really wish Moore had better offensive skills, as he's a freak of an athlete and we're really going to need him to get some minutes next year. Maymon look more and more comfortable and seems to getting near where he was year before last. Were we looking past Tenn Tech and more concerned about Wichita State?....Probably. They'd better come out angry there, or it could get ugly....... |

The game announcers said that this simply wasn't the same Maymon they saw two years ago, that he just doesn't have the hops and moves he used to have. They suspect he's not really 100% recovered from his injury. Maymon didn't start against TTU. Which makes me wonder if he's having some injury issues and CCM wants to limit his minutes a bit. But he still played 22 minutes to the starter Davis' 12 minutes. I thought Thompson played ok, I was looking more how he ran the break and the half court sets, rather than his individual production. He played 22 minutes at the point and didn't take a single shot from the field. He had one free throw point, two rebounds, and two assists. I thought he did a great job running the offense, particularly in the second half when we surged into the lead. He's gonna be the starter, JV, you were right when you saw it and posted it early on. I was scared of a freshman point, but this kid doesn't play like a freshman, he's smart and plays under control and is looking several steps ahead of most other players. He had a good defensive game as well, I don't think he'll be a liability on defense, if he were, CCM just won't play him. He's got enough foot speed to effectively guard a one and is tall enough to guard a two or three. I think we will be a better team as he gains experience. And I like the new high post/low post game CCM is using with Maymon and Stokes. Both are good passers for big men and this offense has been effective since he went to it in the second game of the Thanksgiving tournament. And I ain't scart of Witchataw State. Fuck 'em, we beat them last year, bring 'em on. |

Maymon was late for a pre-game meeting...that's why he didn't start. I disagree with the announcers. Maymon is pretty close to where he was before.... He was never a jumping jack, it's just taken him a while to get his shooting touch and timing back, but he's about there. Both Maymon and Stokes are very good passers and so having either at high post is good if we get them the ball. It's very hard to guard two large fire hydrants. Teams would do well to zone us and make us shoot them out of the zone......if we can. I've been reading people who are down on Hubbs....that's silly. He's just one of those guys who's going to take some time to get his confidence at this level. Once he does...watch out. Martin is actually a very good mentor for kids like him....just act McCrea.... |

The team has changed somewhat from where it was two seasons ago, when Maymon last played. This team is now built around McRae as the primary scorer and Stokes as the primary post player. Maymon sometimes seems to force the issue in his attempt to try to play like he did two seasons ago. |

Actually...I think the team is focused around Stokes. At least it should be. If we can get the ball in his hands and let him pass down low, shoot, or pass out to the wing....somebody's got to be open because you have to double team him now. I know it's too much to ask...but if he's stay next year, we'd still be pretty good. If not, we're going to be really green inside...... |

Where we run into problems, is trying to run our offense too close to the basket. With both Stokes and Maymon under the rim, we are backing the defense down into the paint, which would be ideal if either or both were 6'10" to 7'0" tall. But they aren't and when they are both down low, there just isn't room for them to move and they get their shots blocked (or have to adjust their shot) by taller defenders. That's what's made the high/low post game so effective. It spreads out the defenders and gives both Stokes and Maymon the opportunity to put the ball on the floor and move toward or around the goal. They are both quicker than their defenders and can get their shots off without trouble from taller defenders, who are now on their hip, instead of climbing up their asses. I agree with JV, that the offense is best when run through Stokes. And what Thompson does very, very well, is look inside to get the ball to Stokes and Maymon at the high post. Both our bigs are great passers and our offense is a thing of beauty when they are working together attacking the rim. You can't double team either of them with this high/low post offense, they are too good at passing to the open man. And Tux, last years team was "McRae centric". The previous years team was "Maymon centric". We are best when we are "Stokes centric". If McRae is shooting more than about a dozen shots, we are likely losing or playing from behind. A balanced offense between these three guys will be what makes us go. We don't have to have one guy carry us any more, but the ball must go through Stokes in the half court offense. Thompson understands that and makes it happen. Which is why the point is the most important role on a team. |
