Lessons learned are like bridges burned. You only need to cross them but once.

Butch Jones has done and admirable job of changing the tone and message of the UT football program.

He was worked tirelessly and he has orked smart in generating great PR with the news media, social media, and with high school coaches around the south. He is doing many of the things that this proram needs in order to be in a position to change fortunes.

However, he has had to learn some hard lessons regarding staff changes and they could be costly ones.

First, the move to not retain Brandon Staley. As a result, we lost some damn good defensive line recruits are now in a bad position with our DL depth aftermthe 2013 season.

The Jay Graham fiasco was avoidable, but Jones felt he wanted someone he had worked with before to be his Recruiting Coordinator. A loved figure for Volunteer fans is gone. That is two UT legends that BJ has failed to work something out with. You can not continue to lose such figures and alienate them from Big Orange fans.

This is not a MAC school or a Big East school. Your actions and statements mean something to fans here. When you say that UT will have the best coaching staff in America, UT fans will expect that and hold you accountable because we have real exlectations of that being fulfilled because of last tradition. You can't say things just to sound good. The same goes with actions. You may chase off and alienate a former Cincinnati or Central Michigan player who is in coaching and fans will not bat an eye. Do it here at Tennessee and people will remember.

Thise are some little things that are big thingsmthat BJ has to improve upon that will help the program and ultimately himself.

His actions may be a reflection of what Cheek and Hart think about the program. If you look at the adminstration, a lot is lacking in leadership. Decisions have been made that adversely affect the football program. Hart's handling of the hiring of Jones was borderline Hamilton. As time goes by it is evident that it was Hart who didn't go after Gruden. In fact, Hart's handling of the merger of the the women's and men's athletic departsments was a train wreck in regards to the lawsuits and I'm not going to mention the "termination" of Pat Summit. Needless to say, I'm not so sure that UT football can get back to the way it was under Dickey with Cheek and Hart in charge.

Ainge and guests--"Coach Jones is hurt and kind of angery. Coach Jones, my system works."
Ainge and guests- If I'm Butch Jones, I don't hire anymore VFL guys. He should bring in someone is trusts and is comfortable with!"

Stating he had "the best staff in America" is what coaches say. Urban said it when he took the OSU job and some of those guys we wouldn't want on our staff. It's simply "coaches speak." Making Graham recruiting coordinator would have been a big mistake since the guy can't close on running backs. And if you look at his career path, he has been with 5 colleges. Sounds like if he gets his feeling hurt, he moves to another college. He didn't weight how fans greeted him so warmly as a coach here. He won't get that type of reception at Fl State and will never be loved like he was at Tenn. He burned his bridges. He's not head coaching material. The guy is a career assistant who will coach at many more colleges.

You nailed it BJ. No individual is greater than the total sum of all the parts. Butch Jones did nothing wrong in this situation. He got Azzanni and that is the guy he trusted to put in command of the recruiting office. End of story. And I absolutely, 100 percent agree with what Ainge and company are saying this morning.
Ainge just said, "You want to be the recruiting coordinator, go get some better damn recruits!"

You're right--Jones did nothing wrong with this situation. Agine sounds like he is on the warpath about this and isn't happy with Graham. Has Agine said anything else about it?

Once again, Ainge bored in on the fact that Graham wanted the title of RC and did not get it handed to him. He wished Graham well and good luck but pretty much indicated that he (Ainge) was not worried at all about Graham's departure.

The significance of the date he was hired will one day be recalled with great joy or maybe, many will attempt to forget it. Dec. 7th was the day, yes the same day the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

Excerpt from Rivals (Volquest)

"We are waking up," Jones proclaimed. "And I think you see that in all aspects. By the way we practice, the effort that our players are giving. The effort of our former players. And also in the recruiting process.

"I think there's a lot of energy. I think this is a very prideful program. And so I think obviously, the energy-level of our coaching staff. Our coaches have done a great job. Our administration has done a great job. I think it's a whole effort on everyone. Our fan base has been tremendous. Our former players have been tremendous. When we talk about the Tennessee football family, that encompasses a lot of things."

Here is an interesting article about Butch Jones. It details a portion of his day and how he utilizes his time and energies.

What I find intriguing is that he does not manage recruiting like most coaches do. He does not leave such things to chance. He is from the Nick Saban school of recruiting where he sees himself as the guy doing the bulk of the work. Very interesting to say the least.

I must tell you that John Brice has penned a very impressive piece of work. His writing skills are superior to most who cover the Vols in Knoxville.
Here's some interesting excerpts from the piece that jumped off the page at me.

Why did the coaches bond over the 'Sign your name' mantra?

"Your last name is your personal brand," Jones explains. "When you sign your last name, what does it stand for? Every tackle you make. Every class you attend. Every homework assignment you turn in. Every meeting you sign your last name. That's the only thing that can't be taken from you, your last name. That's your personal brand. What does it stand for?"

Keep an eye on this Jonathan King. He's brilliant at marketing this coach and this program!

Richardson and Jones meet alone at the conference/dinner table, where the autographed photo testimonial from Jones' friend, Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl winning-coach Mike Tomlin, stands framed following Tomlin's Knoxville visit the previous day. In town Wednesday for the Vols' pro day workouts, Tomlin mentions that "I would not hesitate to let my sons play football for Butch Jones."

Jonathan King, Tennessee's creative guru, catches wind of Tomlin's comments, designs the print and hurries to mail it out to prospects across the nation. Tomlin sees the photo on his way to Jones' office and affixes his signature to it.

Soon, wideout Cody Blanc is in the coaches' film room to speak with Azzanni. Blanc promises the coaches, who only semi-seriously needle Blanc about his flowing lox, that a haircut awaits his first touchdown. Bajakian, recalling a one-handed catch Blanc made in the end zone during that morning's practice, wonders aloud if that play shouldn't result in a trim.

"The thing with Butch is that I truly think he gets the big picture," says Tennessee's Director of Football Operations Brad Pendergrass, who could have a path into athletic administration and already has worked with head coaches at Mississippi State, Wisconsin and Tennessee. "He understands the kids who play for him, and he understands recruiting. He knows how to motivate. From talking Xs and Os to embracing social media, he knows how to deliver his message. And he's got a way about him that makes people want to gravitate towards him."

Damn, Greg King is a good looking athlete. Sure wish he could turn it on this year and contribute! I believe the other player in the clip was Greico, walkon linebacker from Farragut.
