Is the Heisman Trophy Relevant? Look at this slide show and tell me that it is or not. Think about how it is voted on, by whom, how the vote is regionalized, etc.... http://likes.com/sports/10-biggest-heisman-busts-of-all-time?pid=87855&utm_source=mylikes&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=ml&utm_term=24937289 |

No, its irrelevant and I didn't even have to look at the slideshow. I determined it was a sham 20 years ago when Gino Tororretta was "given" it. |

Most of the other awards that are granted are much more genuine as far as being "correct" about the best player. But, the Heismann still has more glamour and prestige than every other award combined. |

It's supposed to reflect "the best college football player" for that year. It is a subjective and sometimes bias award. If the media decide that so and so is the best; i.e., Woodson over Manning courtesy of ABC and ESPN then it becomes tainted - at least for that year. Frankly, I haven't watched the presentation since the theft. It was my opinion that Manning deserved the award which like all the pollsters was subjective. Whether the award winner pans out in the pro ranks, I think is irrevelant. Reread the first sentence. That's my two cents worth. |

Of course it is - and will remain so for ever. Example the mention of some who finished second in the voting, i.e. Manning. Or better yet John Majors, second to the "Golden Boy" from Notre Dame (and how many forget the name Jim Brown?) Manning shoulda won the danged thing in 1995. None the less the "value" to Notre Dame down through the decades can be measured accurately - i.e. dollars to the university. Walk though an athletic complex that has a Heisman winner - its a showcase piece. The most recent winner - legend for the rest of his life, and afterwards too. "Johnny Football, Johnny Heisman" The economic impact in College Station, estimated to be > 350K in the last 8 months. He could never play another down for the Aggies - and he would remain "Johnny Football, Johnny Heisman". In the south - Bo, Herschel - advantage Auburn & UGa. UF - 3 QB's and a 4th one named Grossman. I've said it before J. Lewis as a 2nd year player was on his way to a Heisman trophy - playing at a level in some ways superior to the likes of Bo and Herschel. |

The last to win the award before it became a popularity contest hyped by the media may have been Billy Sims or Barry Sanders. |

Johnny "Football" Manziel - on the field - broke every offensive QB record in the books in the SEC. Even casual fans from outside the region can grasp what this freshman accomplished in a conference known as the best in college football - and better known as a defense dominating conference.. Did the win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa - where he was the best player on the field, vs a team loaded with your beloved NFL talent the game that won the Heisman? Or was he just a popular figure with the media in the southeast and east Texas? |
