I remember watching the NFL and listening to Summerall and Tom Brookshier doing the games. Those were so enjoyable. Then Summerall and John Madden teamed up. He was the consummate announcing professional. I remember he called a bowl game just 2-3 years ago.

Summerall and Venturi were drinking buddies and I heard a story about them being in a bar in Memphis when they were working the "St.Jude". Seems they sat down at the bar one afternoon at 1:00PM and never got up to go to the bathroom but were still drinking at 10:00PM. I'm surprise Venturi hasn't had a transplant.

Drinking ruined Ken Venturi's playing and announcing careers.

Summerall had a drinking problem too. He and his old broadcast partner, Tom Brookshier were party animals. They would drink and play tennis in the hotel lobby.

I much preferred Summderall and Brookshier than Summerall and Madden.

I was never a fan of Eard's. I did like Summerall, because the games he called were not about him. He called the game using a minimalist's approach. He and Dick Enberg did football as well as anyone. Enberg is also the best I have ever heard doing basketball.
