Apparently Marlin Lane's disciplinary action is based on his lack of classroom attendance.

I'm hoping we don't lose this kid. Not that he is an all-world type, it's just that we are so short of RBs.

I understand that Lane is back in Florida and it is looking more like he may not be back with the Vols.

Back or not, when was the last time that a player had mysterious "personal issues" *cough* drugs *cough* and was still on the team by the end of the upcoming football season?

I bet we would have to go back to the Fulmer years ...

I thought he had drug issues the year before and he made it through that first season under Dooley.

He did, Dooley knew it and protected him. JJ mysteriously disappeared after the season and before the bowl game to dodge a drug test, but came back just in time to play in the bowl. UT was on break so JJ didn't have to test. Other players knew it and were pissed. That's when I knew Dooley wouldn't make it.

Yes he had drug issues, but I don't recall him getting suspended for it with the "undisclosed personal issues" label (which we all know is 80% of the time drugs, 10% of the time academics, and 10% of the time both) except that long stretch during the Spring prior to his eventual dismissal. He was suspended for that Pilot robbery under Kiffin, of course.

Marlin Lane, of course, also has a smoking gun when it comes to drug issues. We knew it when we signed him, but he is one of those desperate signings we have been doing over the past 4 seasons to fill major voids

He does?

I just dont follow recruiting as much as I used to. What were his issues? I think he got arrested or something in highschool, but I'll be damned if I can remember.

Around Christmas before National Signing Day, Lane was arrested for possession of weed - he was sitting in someone's car where the weed was found by police, and Lane claimed it was not his.

Whether his or not ... you know ... bird's of a feather flock together ...

Shortly after that, Clemson (his childhood dream school) pulled his scholly offer, Lane's dad was unable to convince Dabo to change his mind, and he eventually ended up at Tennessee.

Does anyone think we would keep Lane if we had sufficient number of running backs? It's not worth keeping him for one season. Work with Alden Hill and bring in some new backs next year. We're probably not going to have that good of a win-loss record next season, so let's keep him out, especially if it's about drugs.

Yep. In my opinion, it doesn't matter. The 2013 team is going to really struggle ... we are replacing all of our offensive weapons and we have a defense that is still trying to recover from Hurricane Sunseri. If we hit 6 wins, it will be a good season.

We have others besides Hill who might emerge. Pig Howard and Justin King can play running back. Tom Smith, of course, is just a scholarship-eater.

Big, talented and strong offensive line should open some holes that even Bob Kessling can run through. I suspect that Pig Howard might get the call in August. Hill is showing some potential and running like he did his junior year in high school when he had a veteran offensive line in front of him. Neal can be good if he would just get tougher. I expect this team to be efficient on offense and there is no reason why they can't win eight games this fall. Defense will be closer to 2011 than 2012 group.
