And how you can insinuate that your choice of words in the post was a celebration of a huge commitment is, well, preplexing. These players have been leaving the state for years now, going back to the decline and fall of Phillerup Fultanicroom. all three of the guys who have committed thus far, Wharton, Kelly, Jr., and now Hurd could have gone to multiple schools yet something is going on in Knoxville now that enticed them to stay home and play their college ball. Sorry if you were offended, but was just commenting on what I read. I personally am not prepared to question Butch Jones' recruiting as it has been spectacular with his dazzling start on the Class of '14. |

Jones' recruiting has never been spectacular. Ever. Not anywhere he's ever been, and it certainly was not spectacular in the '13 class for UT. This is exactly why I (and Rev) are concerned, have been concerned, about him being the coach. Everything else looks good. However, that said: this class is shaping up to be spectacular. I'm in 'show me' mode....and this is a hell of a good start. If Jones can keep this up we'll all be happy. Except with UT's luck as "team cup", he'll be successfull then bolt to go coach Alabama when St Nicky leaves or soemthing. |

I'm not offended, I just don't want my views or my excitement level to be misrepresented. To be clear... 1. BJ has a 7-year history of average recruiting. For that reason alone, I am skeptical of his recruiting acumen. 2. I want BJ to sign a top 10 class every year. 3. If a player grows up loving Tennessee and dreaming of playing for Tennessee, then I expect them to commit with Tennessee. Stories like those of Vonn Bell and Andrew Jelks are depressing (but those failures are on Dooley, and not Butch Jones) 4. It is not spectacular simply because these players have committed - I expect players that love Tennessee to commit to Tennessee. What is spectacular to me is that they are committing this early in the recruiting cycle, and that gets me excited because the momentum can be huge for the others who might not be so in love with Tennessee. |

That's a very well articulated, reasoned post Rev. I couldn't agree more. No Vol fan want's CBJ to fail, but it makes sense to be realistic in our expectations. |

This recruiting cycle, as we have been saying, is one of those 'perfect storm' kind of cycles. Lots of good recruits who are legacies, and lots of really good in-state recruits (which is super rare for Tennessee). BJ is the 3rd new head coach at UT in the last 5 years: but he's the first one that may actually be stepping into a fairly good situation. Lots of good recruits that are natural recruits to UT, check. Low expectations for next year, but a REALLY good offensive line, big check. The guy is doing an outstanding job of exploiting the recruiting advantage he's got right now (meaning: I think Wharton and TK Jr may very well be our most effective recruiters currently, and Hurd is about to join right in with them). If he can coach as well as I think he can, THEN pull in a top 5 class next year? Then we will be back to competitive pretty soon. |

I've been on the fence about Jones' recruiting too. I think he's done great with the 2014 class thus far. I hope he can fill the holes in the current roster. Things are starting to look brighter for the Big Orange Nation!!! |

I understand that Vandy coach James Franklin is taking cheap shots at Jalen Hurd on Twitter. |

IIRC - the former Gator and current RB coach had a hand in this commitment. I'll say it again hiring RG was a grand slam for BJ and UT. To BJ's credit - his ability to date, to adapt on a dime to the demands of running a SEC program is quite impressive. recruiting - while it may not have been his strong suit before making the move to Tennessee - in many ways the same can be said for guys like Urban Meyer, Spurrier, Richt,.. |
