I have committed to Tennessee,” an excited Hurd said. “The decision just came natural to me. The first time I visited with the new staff (Feb. 16), it clicked with me and I knew that Tennessee is where I wanted to be. I feel like in my heart this is the place I need to be, and can’t wait to play for my home-state university.”

“Coach Jones is a real genuine guy,” Hurd said. “I just love him. I met his family when I went down there, and they are great. He feels that I fit in perfectly as a running back and that I’m a game-changer for the program. With the new staff, and where they are headed, it’s the place for me. I’m going to do everything I can to help get the program going again.”

Hurd, who is full of pride for his home state, said today is a dream come true.

“I’ve grown up watching Tennessee,” he said. “My grandparents are huge Tennessee fans. For me to stay home and play for the Vols is a dream come true. It’s been amazing the love I have received from the fans. There isn’t another college that has the fans showing me love like Tennessee. I get 50 to 100 Twitter messages a day from people telling me they hope I play at Tennessee. All the ‘Rise and grind’ messages and telling me to be a part of the new class at Tennessee is awesome. It’s a love you get from the home-state fans that you can’t get anywhere else.”

“We have talked a little, and I’m excited that he is going to Tennessee, too,” Hurd said. “I knew Tennessee was where I was going before he committed, so it’s not that his decision affected mine, but I’m happy that he is coming, too. I’m excited all of the guys committed are coming and hope a lot more make the same decision.”

“Coach Jay Graham had told me a lot about the university and my position at Tennessee, but he has left, of course,” Hurd said. “I have talked to (new running backs) Coach (Robert) Gillespie, and I love him and am excited to play for him.”

I'm still of the mindset that BJ struggles to recruit, however getting Hurd and TK this week and EARLY is huge. Both players were thought to be natural leans to Tennessee, so these are the players that should be in orange ... but getting them early is nothing short of amazing.

Just for reference, this is just the opposite of Dooley losing Andrew Jelks in the 2012 class - a player who was about as orange blooded as they come, yet he signs with Vandy.

Hurd was looking for a reason to attend UT. He grew up a UT fan. His family members are Vols fans, his girlfriend is a huge Vols fan (her parents were classmates and a team mate of mine). Getting him excited about the program was important and he found a reason to pull the trigger.

Now that he is on board, Hurd, Todd Kelly Jr, Vic Wharton, and Coleman homes will hopefully get all of the top players in their areas to stand up and take notice of the Vols. Great players want to play with one another.

There are two other kids in the middle Tennessee area, whom we need badly and would give us another shot in the arm are Derek Barnett and Josh Malone. Both are thought to be UT leans. This may send them over the edge. I believe that Barnett is the best football player in the state of Tennessee regardless of position.

My only beef with BJ's recruiting is the idea of recruiting to a system, which we have covered. You need the biggest and baddest big bullies in the trenches in the SEC. Tall skinny offensive tackles will lose to many battles against the big bullies.

Very interesting that you won't allow yourself to celebrate this commitment, but instead must come with a skeptical comment. Oh well, to each his own I guess.

Meanwhile, in Columbus, Ohio, Urbans Meyers just pissed all over himself.

Wharton and Kelly, Jr. have been working Hurd for weeks. I found this interesting since Kelly, Jr. just committed last weekend. Butch's fence around the state of Tennessee is going up a hell of a lot faster than Barry Soetoro's fence on the Mexican boarder! :hide:

The tall, skinny offensive tackle signed with Arkansas! Best I can tell, the three offensive linemen in this year's class and the recent commitment are all 300 pounders, are thereabouts. Don't see the same thing you do with this system recruting you speak of. Looks like to me they are going after the best players available, period.

Give BJ some credit. He has brought in an energy level that has been missing in Knoxville for close to 15-20 years.

How you can interpret my use of words such as "amazing" and "huge" to be a lack of celebration is perplexing.

I have seen some folks try to compare him and his style to Eddie George. I do not see that at all. He runs much like Eric Dickerson. Must have been some Ohio State fans who tried to make the EG comparison.

This is what I've been needing. Not good opinion, but some actual GOOD NEWS about UT's team.

edit: also, he's not Eddie George. He's Eric Dickerson. Best HS RB film I've seen since Jamal.

This is not really true. The excitement level under Kiffin was through the roof.

But otherwise, yes very true. BJ may very well be a Bruce Pearl. I'm still in 'show me' mode...but I'm feeling pretty good about it right now.
