Tight End/Defensive End holding Big Orange offer!

Excerpt from Rivals (Volquest)
One of the prospects the Vols are jumping on early is Brentwood Academy jumbo athlete Derek Barnett. Tennessee offered the Midstate junior Sunday night when the 6-foot-3, 265-pound athlete talked to tight ends coach Mark Elder.

My understanding is that they believe he will grow into a DT. Very good athlete.

Derek Barnett is a two way star at Brentwood. Defensive end/tight end, 6-4, 260.

I agree that all three are must gets.

Barnett is from BA, where we need to sink some roots. Josh's punt return was against my Wave.

I like this kid as a tight end better than I do as a DE and he is damn good at both positions.

We've got him in the top 10 in-state prospects in the top 25 that is going to the newspapers this evening. Kid just looks like a football player and a damn good one at that.

C&P from BigOrangeTailgate on another board:

I got a very good report on Derek while I was at BA today from a staff person who I trust completely that knows Derek very well. He told me that the trip to Knoxville this past weekend couldn't have gone any better and that he and his family loved it; everything about it. He has UT in front by "a lot".

I did ask about the Ohio State situation and was told that Derek really wanted that OSU offer since his grandfather had played there and was "pissed" I think was the word he used about not getting one. I got the impression that Derek knows he is good enough to play anywhere, especially OSU, and was insulted by the lack of an offer since he is a legacy. It was his opinion that at this point Derek will eventually get the OSU offer (he has a previously planned trip to OSU later this month that he will go to) but that UT and our coaches may be too much to overcome at this point. I realize that hurt feelings can be soothed but I get the impression that Derek is really going to be a Vol regardless based on his relationship with our staff.

This guy is a straight shooter and wouldn't make this up just because he knows I'm a Vol. Of course, TIFIW since this didn't come straight from the horses mouth but it's as close as I can get without actually interviewing Derek myself.

He was at BA today and is up to 270 and working hard in the weight room. The guy plays with a chip and a bit of nastiness. Hope we get this guy in Orange soon!

Derek Barnett got his offer from Ohio State on Tuesday and was excited to get it. Some Vols fans thought that was it, that the Vols were out of the running. Barnett was schedule to attend and participate in the Ohio State camp in order to get his offer. Now he has that offer before going to camp.

This from a poster on another board, who attended and knows the folks at Brentwood Academy.

Quick update since I was at BA today. DB cancelled his camp trip to tOSU this weekend. He will still OV to Washington and UOV to tOSU but is all Vol at this point. His mother also wants him at UT. BA staffer I spoke with expects him to commit to UT before the season starts.

SN (and OT I know): but Gaulden will also be a Vol before the season starts according to the guy I spoke with.

If anything changes and DB is overwhelmed by the tOSU experience I'll post an update.

TIFWIW as always...this is from a guy I trust but is obviously not first hand info.
So Derek Barnett has cancelled his trip to Ohio State's camp. I bet that ticked Herban Meyer off to no end. Derek will still take an unofficial visit to Ohio State later this month.

His mother wants him to play at UT. That is always great to hear, as Mom's play a big role in their children's lives.

What Momma wants, momma usually gets. Barnett is going to be a beast in college and I think he understands the immediate needs in '14 and beyond that Tennessee has.

The Ohio State 247 site tweeted tonight tgat withe addition of Jaylen Holmes, Ohio State does not have room for Derek Barnett.

Could it be true that Barnett will commit to the Vols on his birthday, which is Tuesday June 25th?

For those that asked. I was at BA today and there is no real change and that's good! BA coach told me that Derek did NOT have a good visit to OSU at all. He does not feel the love there at all and he isn't happy about it according to the coach. The only surprising thing is that CJ didn't have a good visit either. He must have been at a camp and said he did very well. Then the coaches invited him into their office for a few minutes and all they talked about was wondering if he would get any taller. Apparently, he was steamed! Anyway, the coach said he would be surprised if Barnett didn't pull the trigger before the season started for UT and same for Gaulden, although he thought Gaulden would be first. Again, this is recruiting, so take it all with a grain of salt (or should I say a grade of slaw)!

CJ is the son of former Tennessee Titan Chris Sanders, who starred at Ohio State. Sanders has some very strict Christian values and if he believes that Urban Meyer is scum, he will not push his son towards Ohio State.
