The Evolution of Linebacker

Mike Farrell from Rivals write a nice piece on the evolution of the linebacker. Dillon Bates is featured prominantly in the column because he is good example of the future of the linebacking position.

Teams want faster linebackers in the middle to combat the spread. Slower linebackers struggle once the play gets outside of the tackle box. Thus, faster linebackers are needed to defend the spread. Still, the strong inside running teams demand that you have a middle linebacker who can fight off guards and fullbacks.

In the NFL, the middle linebacker is a 2 down player at the most. That trend towards nickel defenses with bigger and faster safeties may be working it's way deeper into college play calling.

What was Dillon's HS position? Didn't he play a lot of DB?

Galla,
Dillon has another year of high school ball. He is a linebacker and as far as I know, always has been. He's listed right now at 6-3, 220 or 225. Will probably go about 230 by the time he starts his college career.

Bates was listed as a safety. However, he plays linebacker, but it is obvious that he lacks the speed to play safety in the SEC, but he is
lenty fast enough to play linebacker in the SEC. He has the frame to add a lot more weight if he chooses to do so.
