My Webpage http://m.outkickthecoverage.com/texass-deloss-dodds-grapples-with-losing-legacy.phpIt did not take long for A&M to replace the Longhorns as the top program in that state. Damn.....that's gonna leave a mark! As Travis stated, Dodds's arrogance destroyed the Big 12, harmed his own network, and pushed A&M onto center stage. |

OBSESSION - tsk, tsk, tsk, - #1 - indeed it took less than one year for Texas A&M to establish themselves as an elite program in the SEC, more than likely the dominant program in the entire conference - or as you call it "center stage". Any way you slice it A&M has an advantage - students, undergraduate/graduate - world class, not regional, but world class. Athletics - national championship caliber. Campus - well, road trips are common, home towns, Corpus, San Antone, 6th Street, DFW, etc. After years and years of being an also ran in the Big 12 (just ask the fellow who played at Texas Tech) - the move to a conference where the Aggies could take advantage of what the school has to offer - was an excellent choice for them - and yes does come at the expense of some of the so called legendary programs in the SEC. #2 - if the narrow focus is just football - well Kevin Sumlin, a coach one of the legendary programs in the SEC opted not to interview, who then hired a no body from LT, sits at the table with Nick Saban - and actually is scoreboard vs Alabama.. His body of work as a player, assistant, and now HC is impressive - and can only improve. #3 - We know of no one that is even passively associated with the University of Texas, Austin that begrudges a single thing to Texas A&M - history shows that to be a truism. Sure there are some 2%'ers outta College Station that have this obsession - BFD. Around here we'll all proud of their accomplishments - having watched them grow up and become class acts - representing themselves with much higher standards than is common elsewhere in the SEC.. None the less Texas A&M's last lap around the Big 12 - known as the GTFO tour - is history. Facts are the Aggies struggled as a member of the Big 12 - and needed a change to achieve what they were capable of accomplishing. We couldn't be more happy for all the local kids who are student athletes in College Station and the success they've enjoyed in their first year in the SEC - combined with all their NC's won in the recent past as a former member of the Big 12. #3 - the Big 12 is doing well - just as M. Slive. Destroyed? Again - the original Big 12 was a mismatched conference from the get go. MU and A&M moving to another conference - replaced by a couple program that were, as competitive in football, as both MU and A&M were historically - well go figure.. As to the ESPN owned property TLN - seems that ESPN is pleased with its investment.. #4 - interesting how you swing from the ball sac of one of the biggest DB's in cyberspace when it fits your pin headed agenda. |

*If* that is the view you're taking - about 12 teams in the SEC need to move on to either the ACC or the Big East. Regarding the Aggies - K. Sumlin - look at his body of work at UH. His ConferenceUSA offense ripped to shreds SEC defenses - and unfortunately they're going to be even better in 2013. Its nothing more than a glorified Texas HS offense. Just think of what Sumlin now has at his disposal, just at QB. RSF - M. Davis - a bigger, stronger, faster J. Manziel. Another kid, one of those "pro style" QB's . L. Joekel's - little brother who'll be a NFL QB. 2) the best offensive line in the SEC 3) the best group of WR's in the SEC 4) 3 deep NFL caliber RB's The Aggies have the potential to break ever offensive record in the history of the SEC in 2013.. Oooooh wait they've already done that in their 1st year in the SEC. M. Snyder in his 1st year as a DC in the SEC - has to be pleased. No SEC caliber players - and with that able to stop SEC offenses.. They'll be much better in 2013. |

The Texas is story is a good lesson for greedy people. They thought they were going to take over college football by forming this power confernce out of the pac 12. Then with the California and Texas exposure it would be over for everyone else. Well Slive was 2 moves ahead of him the whole time. edited: And let me add; Texas greed over conference revenue sharing cost the Big 12 Nebraska. So not only no super conference out west, but he weakened the conference he was already in. All of this made the Longhorn network worthless. Edited by gatewayghost, Feb 14 2013, 03:20 PM.

Three things at play here - and its obvious based on comments - few understand college athletics. #1 - check the financial state of affairs at UTK - on a comparative basis to UTA. #2 - greed - h'mmm - some refer to that as sound financial planning - grow revenue - make a profit, prosper. One has to be a fool, to believe the future of any school is built on debt. FWIW - check out the #'s of tickets sold 2012 - the top 5 programs - top 10 programs. Tennessee may, may hit what 82K, average in 2013. Doesn't take long to figure out the projected revenue #'s vs say 100k average. The difference needs to come from somewhere - call me a greedy MOFO - but if I were the AD at UTK - that is needed revenue just to keep treading water.. #3 - Slive well, for all the yapping about the Big 12 - he somehow looked at the future and said - lets join up with the Big 12. As to the LHN - once again check with the owners of LHN, that being ESPN. The investment by ESPN is a solid one - and both the university and athletic department generate revenue, i.e. millions per yer.. #4 - Nebraska made an excellent move, on their part. Competitive wise - the Huskers struggled in the Big 12. when the former power house Big 8 had to made the move to survive - joining up with the Texas schools after the blow up of the SWC was their best, and only option. Good fit? Not really - but it worked for a # of years. The Huskers saw the future when losing the 1st Big 12 CCG. Warden Tom knew the gig was up won another NC - then retired. Colorado the other school most overlook had a nice run in the Big 8 - then hard times in the Big 12, then fell in to the abyss - moved to PAC12 - and remains in the abyss - though doing okay money wise. Now, back to NU that they've made the move - things are looking better - they're making money - the BTN (a FOX owned property) is doing well. And even more important - with help from the AAU members within the conference - NU may once again regain membership in the AAU. Addendum - regarding a potential revenue stream - that isn't on the market - and all in all - where Slive swung and missed. "the SEC must still decide whether it will follow the Pac-12′s plan and create and launch a 100% league-owned network or whether it will go the Longhorn Network route and simply collect a check while ESPN does all the work. (Expect it to be the latter.)" IMO - the SEC cannot afford to launch its own network - now understand why the SEC needs ESPN to be successful with its investment in the LHN.. " IMO - the SEC cannot afford to launch its own network - now understand why the SEC needs ESPN to be successful with its investment in the LHN.." Actually humble, it's the other way around. An SEC Network would destroy ESPN's coverage of college football. They know that the vast majority of TV sets in the US are tuned to SEC games on Saturday, far above any other conference. That's why the SEC/ESPN contract reads no SEC Network. |

Repeating once again Texas A&M has the returning #1 offensive line in the SEC - two of them projected to be 1st rounders in next years NFL draft - one being a top 5 pick. To correct your obvious error. Texas A&M - loses L. Joekel the #1 draft choice in the NFL. (FWIW his little brother would be the starter for Tennessee at QB) Jake Matthews - who woulda been a top 5 pick this year - is returning for his senior year - and moving to LT. And his replacement at RT - M. Matthews. Just ask around the SEC how well the kid played as a true freshman - don't worry about the RT slot. If it weren't for his big brother and Joekel he would have been a starter, as a true freshman, in the SEC at RT. Then add to that C. Ogbuehi who many project to be a 1st round NFL draft pick "if" he decides to come out after his 2013 season. Compton, Gutekunst a couple youngsters Saban wanted - will be just fine. Tennessee has a good OL - A&M, LSU Alabama, Florida - leaders in this area. |

Humble Neb won three NC's in the Big 12 and were a major player in college football from the 1960's to 2000. They didn't struggle then. Every team has down period and Neb had them in the 2000's and are only a fair team now. They left the conference because of Texas. A&M left the conference because of Texas. |

The SEC match-ups - focused on football only - that spark national interest are already available. Alabama, Florida, LSU, Auburn, and to some extent UGa - carry the load. National interest in watching, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri? That is 50% of the conference - combined with the 8 game conference schedule. Slive has some work to do. tBTN is the baseline - one that many believe the SEC is benchmarking. Its a huge money maker for the Big10 - a 51/49 partnership with Fox. Combine that with the Big10's alum base, nationally, its, after the fact, easy to understand why its been successful. The SEC launching its own network? When tBTN is the baseline? A partnership with ESPN or Fox - both big boys that work with the NFL. FWIW - check who controls the tier 3 stuff within the SEC.. ESPN currently owns the rights to all the stuff that finds its way to conference networks, i.e. the tier 3 stuff. |

Do you live under a rock? Nebraska won NC's as a member of the Big8 - It lost the 1st Big12CCG - won the next season winning its last NC. So where do you come up with this "won 3 NC in the Big 12" - Or do you just enjoy making stuff up as it suits your needs? The lack of understanding the where's and why's of conferences by guys like yourself is fascinating. When in doubt make stuff up. The structure of the Big 12, from the get go is well understood. 4 teams from the SWC - and the entire Big 8. Two regional conferences with three established national programs. Nebraska wasn't happy, from the get go where the conference HQ was located - nor the changes, and yes they were dramatic, that came with the new conference. Nebraska made the move to the Big 10 for every good reason - a move that no other university forced them to make. Why you believe otherwise is borderline retarded.. The same for Colorado - for whatever reasons tards like yourself keep forgetting CU. Texas A&M - once again no one forced them to make the move to the SEC. If you want to somehow believe Texas pushed them out the door - cause both Nebraska and Texas A&M kept losing to them on the football field, is well - retarded. Money? (Google this you if want to) UTA offered Texas A&M a joint partnership in what is now tLHN - and A&M opted not to - even with UTA providing all the funding. Yes, it was a risk for both universities. Fox was the main player - then ESPN upped the ante. What you fail to grasp - the relationship between the two schools Texas and Texas A&M remain a strong one - both are, and have been powerhouses in driving academics in the state, nationally and internationally - that won't change. FWIW I'll add Rice University in to this too - as Rice was one of those SWC schools pitched over the side when the Big 12 was formed. |
