Jones Getting To Know Nashville Coaches

Derek Dooley stepped into a dumpster fire. He did some things that were good for the program and we are learning that he did not do some things that he should have to improve the program.

This was one of them. He never spoke with or met most Nashville football coaches. He was doing fine recruiting Atlanta, butmhe laid an egg in our own state.

We're heading out of Nashville having spent the last 36 hours dealing with this signing day as well as talking to the staff. Here are some thoughts heading back to Knoxville.I think this staff is comfortable with who they have coming out of this class, but not satisfied at all with how they finished. They seem genuinely excited about a number of guys and in talking to the staff I don't think they felt like they really reached on a number of these guys they took late. Moving ahead, they have already done a lot of work in 2014, 2015 and they have even done some work in 2016. They talked to a lot of guys yesterday letting them know they wanted to them to be apart of their class a year from now. They don't feel they are too far behind because of how many guys they were pursuing in Tennessee and other parts of the country, especially with guys like Thig on the staff where they aren't changing any relationships. You could tell this staff really likes what they have at receiver and quarterback. They are excited to work with those groups. They like the defensive backs as well and fill like they upgraded some speed there. They do feel like they were short at a number of spots, but didn't want to take a guy to just take him. We'll have more coverage of everything over the next few days and more stuff in the War Room tonight.-Fortenberry

UT does need to sign the best players in Tennessee. Normally, that's 3-4 SEC caliber players.

The more that comes out about Dooley, the more we see he hurt us badly with HS coaches in the state of Tenn and on the field. Even the worst coach could do a few positive things. But when you weight things, Dooley set the program back for years. Jones has a chance to turn it around but that will take 3 to 4 years.

BJ, our program was in the crapper before Dooley and Kiffen both took over. Kiffin cleaned the walls and toilets as he scrubbed the program down. Dooley brought in some talent at WR, QB, and OL. His inability to get anything going on the defensive side of the ball exposed one of his weaknesses.

He had a pipeline between Knoxville and Atlanta. He obviously liked getting back to that area because he had no problem visiting recruits there. As we are finding out, he totally ignored Nashville and the rest of the state of Tennessee with the exceotion of east Tennessee.

Bottomline- our program was set back over ten years ago, but few fans paid attention. Dooley changed some of the culture, but he was not taking the program any higher than where it was.

Am working on a hard copy letter to Jones. Am going to point out a few programs he should keep an eye on in West Tennessee but outside of Memphis. For example, Milan will have two starters on the Kentucky defense this year, one of them was the second leading tackler in the SEC last season. Boy Kiffin ignored them completely, electing to recruit thugs and thieves.
The program that year in and out has the most raw talent is Haywood County (Brownsville). Coach James Counce may have a prospect at Henry County this fall. Dyersburg has a very talented 6-5 quarterback who is flying under the radar because they only throw the ball about eight or nine times a game. This kid has been camping at some of the big ones for three years now. A student in the classroom.
I really think Jones is sincere about in state recruiting and I don't think he will snubb the programs in West Tennessee as did Flummo, Boy and Dooley.

It would nice to have a minimum of 4 coaches scouting Tennessee high school games each Friday night.

Two need to scouting M. TN games and two need to be scouting W. TN games each week.

You just can't get over Fulmer and for some reason can't put Dooley in perspective!

I say the same thing about you, except you have selective amnesia, as to how this program got to be where it is today.

Only the Tux knows. You're amazing! You tell Jones who his assistants should be and how he should close. Like anyone would listen to an internet junkie instead of the head coach.

7 coaches on staff have areas in TN to recruit in 2014. It should be interesting.
