I just want to take back some things I was saying yesterday out of rabid emotion. I'm glad to have Butch Jones here. There aren't many coaches capable of this job but I think Jones fits a lot of requirements; 1. You have to be a football junkie. You must eat, breathe, sweat, and sleep football 2. You have to be fully of energy because it's easy to get down as the head coach here. You are always looking around and teams just get more loaded every year so it takes a very positive human being to continue fighting every day with positive energy 3. You have to be a great recruiter, and this was my knock on Jones yesterday and his staff. However, looking back, we had some big time recruits who had no interest in UT at all, and in 31 days Jones really really impressed this people and got them to at least consider UT. So I have no doubt, especially after listening to Von Bells high school coach, that Jones really gets it on the recruiting trail. The damage Dooley did can't be ignored. I try to divert Dooley criticism for Mike Hamilton, but when you look at this Von Bell debacle you can't help be think Dooley did not give a damn about UT football he was only hear for a free winning lottery ticket. How in the hell can you have a 5 star, game changing safety, 100 miles from home, who was a Vol fan, and you won't even drive an hour to watch him play or even consider offering a scholarship? Especially when you have the worst secondary in SEC history. Then you have Urban Meyer flying in from Columbus every week to watch him play. I've sort of went to forgiveness mode on Von Bell and am really looking forward to NSD next year. 4. You have to love the Vols and want to be the coach here. Butch Jones said today that we will be tired of him in 30 years. I know coaches are like oil salesman but I really believe his comments about UT since he's been here. |

Good post! Your #3 is spot on as far as Dooley. It was well known that he nor his staff attended high school games on Friday nights, rather they stayed at home with their families while other SEC coaches were attending games and being seen. Dooley didn't return phone calls from high school coaches, and shunned them at speaking engagements. Hard to believe Dooley was ignorant enough to think he could build a competitive program in the SEC by doing this... or not have a running backs coach????? Absolutely the worst coaching hire ever!!!!! |

Good post Ghost. You're right about Dooley when you say the damage can't be ignored. How could he not have recruited Bell harder. No telling who else he drove away. He was a bad coach and it hurt us dearly. But Jones is hustler and I am confident he will turn the program around. It will tough going for a couple of years because of the situation he inherited. |
