Here is what I believe we will need by position from our 2014 recruiting class QB - 1 - Go after a damn good and do not settle and skgn just anyone. RB - 3-4 WR - 3-4 TE - 2-3 OT - 2 OG - 2 C - 1 DT - 4 DE - 2 OLB - 3 MLB - 2 CB - 2-3 S - 2-3 |

Too many wide receivers. More offensive linemen and another defensive end. Not sure we need a QB next year. |

Screw the position needs, we all know what those are (meaning: we pretty much need everything). What REALLY, DESPERATELY need in 2014 is somewhat easier to quantify: we need playmakers. Guys that make the difference individually to win games. Guys that actually catch the ball on 3rd and 15 rather than drop it, guys that actually pick the fumble up rather than whiff at air and let the offense get it back...guys that can make the sack on 3rd and 5. Playmakers. We've basically had two of those in the last 5 or 6 years: Hardesty and Berry. Janzen and DaPrick were close, but had so much baggage it outweighed everything else. That's why we sucked last year, too. Nobody reached out and TOOK the inches. This class, for example. Would be a great class in the Big East. Or, it would be a good enough SEC class had we actually landed even 2 real difference makers. We didnt. |

6 OL (good quantity instate) 1 TE (WR Creamer approaching TE size at 6'4", 220, 4.7) 3 WR (Wharton & Malone from instate) 3 RB (Jalen Hurd, maybe 1 JUCO) 1 QB 6 DL (3 JUCO if available) 5 LB ( 1 JUCO if available) 4 DB (nice instate crop and legacies) 1 K/P (3 good ones instate) 30 Total probably 31 to give but one goes to Swafford

I agree with Zip. UT needs so many different positions next season, but desperately needs playmakers. |

First the numbers. 29. On paper, we have 24 Seniors and most will depart ... and with the normal attrition, I would expect a full 25+4 backcounts to be signed. Second, just look at my titles and note that we need 17 on defense this year. That should tell you a lot about our problems. Offense (11): QB (0) - I wouldn't be surprised if we do not take a QB in the 2014 class since we will have 3 freshmen quarterbacks. One of our QBs will leave, but it will be hard to attract someone. I don't blame Coach Jones for taking Dobbs, but our QBs are not well spread. RB (3) - After Neal leaves and probably Tom Smith, we will only have four RBs ... and probably only two of them are any good. We need at least 6. This is more of a talent issue than a bodies issue. (Instate: 4* Jalen Hurd) WR (2) - We are really log-jammed with FR/Soph with only 1 upper classman (Junior Vincent Dallas). Because WRs are notorious for quitting in their first couple of years, we will need to replace a couple ... also, Croom needs to move to TE. (Legacies: Neiko Creamer) (Instate: 4* Josh Malone) TE (1) - We only need 1, but because of the talent concerns we should take 2 OL (5) - We came up short this year by a little, but still need more bodies. We will lose 4-5 off the line after the 2013 season, including at least 3 starters (4 if Tiny decides to turn pro). (Instate: 4* Alex Bars) Defense (17): DT (4) - The scariest problem we have is at DT where we are severely short - we have a recruiting emergency here. We really only have 4 DTs and we 3 of them are Seniors. Clark and Carson are frankly dead weight ... perhaps one of them will blossom. We need 2 JUCOs for immediate help and then 2 others. DE (3) - Despite taking 3 DEs in the 2013 class, we still need to recruit hard here as we lose 3 Senior DEs this year. LB (5-6) - Two years in a row of missing out on strengthening our LBs will show in 2015 and beyond if we don't do something. This is not just merely a numbers issue, but we have severe talent problems at this position. (Legacies: 4* Dillon Bates) (Instate: 4* Petera Wilson) DB (4) - Although we've recruited a lot of bodies the last two years, talent is still lacking and we lose 50% of our two deep (four Seniors) at the end of this season. (Legacies: 4* Vic Wharton, 4* Todd Kelly Jr., Elliot Berry, Evan Berry) (Instate: Rashaan Gaulden) Special Teams (1) We desperately need a kicker. Edited by OrangeRev, Feb 6 2013, 08:31 PM.

Better get them some big time DL, OL, and TB or we will be door mats for some time to come. Good start on 2014 with legacies and in state talent. |

Butch reportedly said that he has a formula that he uses to determine how many players at each position. BJ said that he likes to carry the following number of players by position: 15 OL 12 WR 5 QB's 12 DB's I did not hear what he said about the other positions. I would guess the others: DL he would carry 14-16 DL (DTs &DEs). RB - 6 LB - 8 TE - 4 Edited by TennesseeTuxedo, Feb 8 2013, 11:24 AM.

Any school out there needs at least 1 QB and at least 1 TB each and every single class. QB's get hurt, they go Pro early if good, and they get pissed and leave if they don't see PT. So have at least 4 on schooly at all times. |
