There were a lot of disappointments in how things went down over the past few days. We were the proverbial bridesmaid too many times on too many prospects. Nobody remembers whom finished second. Here is how I see we did in filling our needs and getting the job done. QUARTERBACK - Tyler Bray moves on to the NFL. We return two highly recruited QBs in Worley Peterman. Now we add to Elite 11 QBs to the mix from this class in Riley Ferguson and Joshua Dobbs. QB is set for the future.Grade A RUNNING BACK - The Vols return Neal and Lane. Ourmstarting RB spot is set, but our depth is extremely shallow. The new staff aimed high and whiffed on Derrick Green and several other backs at the last minute. They settled Jabo Lee, a RB with grade issues and coming off of a knee injury. Grade F WIDE RECEIVER - We lose two very talented receivers and will rely on several redshirt freshmen and sophomores. The signees will be given a chance to earn a lot of playing time. Marquez North is a monster and will challenge for playing time immediately. Paul Harris, Ryan Jenkins, and Joshn Smith are veryntalented WRs. strong class of WRs. Grade B+ Tight End - We lose Mychel Rivera to the NFL and return a gimpish pair of average tight ends. Our signing class is comprised of a Cincinnati recruit AJ Bransil and a JUCO former volleyball player Woody Quinn. Grade D+ OFFENSIVE LINE - We return four of our five starters from a year ago and our best left guard Marcus Jackson came off of the bench and will take over there. No immediate needs here, but in 2014, we lose all but Jackson. We lost some prospects here because of the coaching change. Butch traded out a high school all american guard for a Cincinatti recruit at tackle. Austin Sanders was a good pick up, but the rest that make up the rest of our OL class are question marks. Grade C DEFENSIVE LINE -We will be okay in 2013, but we lose a lot after that. We lost some JUCO DTs in the coaching change and did have to lose them, but we did. We signed some decent DEs who will likely grow into DTs. Grade D+ LINEBACKERS - Our lack of speed at linebacker showed last season. We missed out on two very good linebackers that we deslerately needed. Cory Vereen could be a good MLB. Grade D DEFENSIVE BACK - Again we showed a lack of foot speed in the seconary last year. We had some decent signees, but again we whiffed on the best safety in the nation. Grade D+ OVERALL RECRUITING CLASS GRADE C- Edited by TennesseeTuxedo, Feb 6 2013, 05:29 PM.

Reeves-Maybin...yeah, that kids going to be a LB. He'll open at SS or FS or something, but that'll last until like the 2nd day of pads or something. Vereen and him will likely be okay, giving the benefit of doubt maybe that one is a C -. QB recruiting is good. Specifically: Dobbs. I hope that kid turns out to be the second coming of T-Rob, because we are going to need it (and after looking at his film, he's pretty good). WR class is an A, and that's with a few of them likely ending up sliding over to the other side of the ball. Everything else, absent a few glimmers of hope here and there, about makes me want to cry. |

Add one to that number, and that's the number of DTs that we will effectively have after the 2013 season. We are in major trouble at that position. |

What was BJ thinking when he decided to not bring Staley back as a GA? Someone had to tell him that Staley was the key to some good JUCO DTs? |

Zip, I believe that you are right. In the MAC and Big East, he was wading in the kiddie pool. Now he finds himself swimming with the sharks in the deep end. |

I can't believe you think he didn't know what he was getting into. It must be a deep secret how recruiting in the SEC is so different. Only posters on this board know. Jones is outsider and had no clue about the SEC. Jones should consult with us because he so naive. After all, he's only a coach. |

I don't think it is about knowing or not knowing "recruiting" in the SEC ... rather it is about knowing the "recruits". Jones and (most of) his staff have relationships with Big East and Mac level talent rather than SEC level talent. Why did Auburn do so well? Because their coaches have the relationships already established (particularly Malzahn). Now, I think that Jones and his staff will spend the next year doing a lot of relationship building leading up to the 2014 NSD. And, hopefully, things will be better. |

Rev Not knowing SEC recruiting is what you claimed in past posts and it is different from what you say above that about Jones not having relations with the current recruits. Big difference. He isn't going to hire coaches who are good SEC recruiters, just to save this class. He has to coach players and he is comfortable with his staff doing so. He is also comfortable with their ability to develop relationships. The fact that they came so close with a number of top recruits in such a short period of time indicates they will do a heck of a job recruiting in the future. Give him a break! |

Close is awesome! We ALMOST have good recruits! We were almost awesome! Only problem with that is, almost notwithstanding, we suck. |

Remember this name, Allison Maurer, staff nutrionist for Tennessee athletics. Both Carr and Miller will be turned over to her and both will eventually be defensive tackles at Tennessee. Carr is already close to the weight for a tackle. He is the size of an end in a 3-4 defense, not a 4-3. Miller will need to add about 20-25 pounds. Jancek, Thigpen, Martinez and Graham know what it takes to recruit in the SEC. Do you guys not think that Jones had conversations with those coaches all through the short and very hectic time they had to try and salvage this class? Come on now, get real. BTW, I now believe that CUM sent the Johnson kid to Knoxville just to get in Vonn Bell's ear. I also believe the rumor that CUM sent Bell's family a video of Candy players celebrating after they beat the Vols this past season. There isn't much that can be done when you have a player and a family that is gullible enough to buy into what the scumbag CUM does. I'm not pleased with this class but it is what it is. I see some guys who can compete in this group. Next year's class must be top 10 in the nation. |
