This is the weakest class in years. We struck out on about everyone. Right now we have only 4 four star players, which is a middle of the road Big East team. Plus, we are going to lose next year in the offensive and defensive lines. Penn State will be back before we will. Your thoughts?

We actually have 5 four-stars (technically 6, but looking at Dobbs offer list, I don't think he's a four-star).

The biggest problem with this class is that we didn't meet core needs at LB, OL, DL, TE, and RB.
  • Dooley had good classes on paper, but he struggled with recruiting LBs over the last two years and RBs over the last 3 years. So, in this class it was absolutely vital that we sign players at those two positions. We didn't. We have a disaster looming at those two positions.
  • I completely understood why we didn't sign much on the O-line last year because we had other, more crucial needs. But, that meant that we needed about 4-5 quality O-linemen in this class because we are going to be in major pain in the 2014 and following years if we didn't. And, because of the decision to not retain Pittman, we lost out.
  • We have a couple of TEs on the team that are SEC-caliber ... but we should have about four. What we signed are a couple of scout team players - I don't think they are SEC-caliber. By the way, this isn't totally Butch's fault ... Dooley had nothing going on at this position either.
  • Although our D-line is in good shape for 2013, the situation is similar to the O-line in that we are going to be hurting in 2014 and beyond. So this meant that we needed to boost the depth. Carr and Miller are fine, but we needed to sign five players on the D-line this year.

What was good about this class?
  • Every class needs a QB ... and we got one ... actually two ... but the point is that we did good here. Although we didn't need to add Dobbs, it is a good signing since we can use the depth.
  • We needed to replace WRs that have been lost and we did that. Dooley and his staff did a great job of lining up our WR class, and Butch held onto them.
  • Our DBs are just horrid and we needed a significant infusion of talent. I'm pleased with what we have there. Some good SEC talent across the board at S and CB. The hiring of Martinez and Thigpen helped to bring in talent in our backfield - so, good job with the current staff there.

I said it yesterday, I've said it before...I'll say it again before August. This staff better well be able to coach, because they suck at recruiting.

Rev, I will refer to your post when I have to struggle to put some kind of positive spin on this embarassment. As Tux has noted in another thread, this staff got out recruited by every other team that had big turnover in staff or new head coaches. As I noted last night, I had gotten very uneasy about Bell and he did what I almost all day yesterday.
Bottom line is, we have probably just witnessed the shortest "new coaching honeymoon" in history. The meltdowns on all boards will continue for several days, that's why I probably am getting out for a week or so. Bad thing about it is, had the ESPNU show on and have shut that baby off too, way too disgusting, well maybe that's too strong, depressing might be a better work.
Anyway, I feared that Doug Supernaw might be needed today, so here he is. Dedicated to Butch Jones and his coaching staff, "Couldn't roll me a seven if they gave me loaded dice, couldn't draw a hand if I sat here all night"

I agree with you guys on this class. Tux is right about BJ not closing. Hopefully, he learned something. I will add that we seem to be over stacked with wide receivers. I don't understand why we don't do better at linebacker. Plus, what Rev said about the need for offensive and defensive lines. Even if we get them next year, they won't be effective right away. I am feeling passive about Tenn sports, which is worst than being negative. When expectations are built up so high by the coaching staff, it's a long fall to reality. I am deeply disappointed.

Kentucky was and still is an all time low. I doubt it's possible for me to get any lower, because after that one I have just no expectations at all.

Not sure Kentucky was our bottom. Since then a lot more bad things have happened. Just in last few months we've been. 1. Turned down by a coach at Louisville. 2. Turned down by a WR coach who we named a street after. 3. Turned down by a 5 star, life long, close by, UT fan.

No no, Kentucky was the bottom for me. Losing to THAT Kentucky team....one with a WR playing QB, and only running 3 damn plays all game long, that we could not stop...I cant go lower than that. We could lose to Hoover Highschool tomorrow (and I think we probably would, by the way) and it still would not be any worse than that, at least not for me. There was a ray of hope last year before we choked and tanked from the second half of Florida through the end of the season, but that was only fools gold that I willingly bought into consciously, because I was just plain tired of being negative about the program in general.

I'm not sure I'm capable of doing that again. This staff sucks until they do something that doesnt suck.

If you're going to the rah-rah breakfast, lunch or dinner with Jones are you going to ask the obvious questions; 1) where is the greatest coaching staff and 2) what happened to recruiting?

I'm not spending the money. Just a never ending song.
