Phillips is out the door, based on what we have heard the past month. He never allowed himself to fit in and has carried an attitude since he got to UT. My guess is that he will play for either S. Florida or Central Florida. |

I thought he might make it through the year, but there have been far too many rumors for this to be a surprise ... I'm guessing that this is related to academics. |

Academic stupidity, or twitter stupidity. Either way, stupid is as stupid does. |

Here is the deal on Phillips. He was a big #270-280 DL in High School and rated as 4* player. Signed with UF. But after signing with UF he ballooned up to #325-330 and also had some academic troubles- which UF saw as a convenient way to dump his ass. But his academics weren't really that bad which is why UF released him and he easily got into UT. But it was his Laziness and Weight that were the real problems and that never got better. He saw he was going to have trouble playing at UT unless he started working much harder so he started mouthing off on the social sites hoping to get booted- which he got his wish. Fat, Drunk, and Stupid is no way to go thru life Phillips. |

These are the type of recruits not to take a chance on. You know there was a problem with him when Florida dropped him. This site was cheering when we got him but a problem is a problem and it doesn't go away because he enrolled at Tenn. |

Muschamp dumps him and Dooley takes him. Based on that, do you think there's any correlation to why each program is in the shape they're in? |

No correlation. We lost a couple of players too late in the recruiting cycle (Peters, Santos) and we had a spare scholarship. It is a no-brainer to try to get him. Also, everything I've read noted that Muschamp was fighting to get him on the team, but admissions would not let him in. Edited by OrangeRev, Oct 30 2012, 03:53 PM.

On the first part I agree- it was a no brainer to take a chance on a 4* DT who was signed by UF and then fell into your lap. It would be crazy not to. But it would also be crazy to get your hopes up that a fatass with grade issues would straighten up once he left his Momma in FL. But i disagree on the Muschamp part. i heard just the opposite. I heard he ballooned up to #330 from #270 where he played as a SR by this past spring and UF regretted signing him so they used the academic issues as an excuse to boot him. But his academics were not that bad and that shows you that other SEC administrations will help out their team and make up some excuse on why they are not admitting. Hardly ANY athlete has the admission criteria to get into UT or to UF as a regular student so you could make this argument on ANY player. But UF decided to cut their ties with a slacker they no longer wanted, and used their admission Dept. as an excuse. I remember Phillips and his family squawking that he had done all he needed to academically. And they were right but didn't have a clue as to what was going on. The FL athletic department let it be known that they no longer wanted him. |

Whether you agree or disagree is a matter of opinion, since Muschamp refused to comment on the matter ... I heard Muschamp fought for him in one ear, and I heard Muschamp not fight for him in the other ear. I also heard that whatever Muschamp wanted was immaterial since it was out of his hands. Regardless of what Muschamp wanted or didn't want, the fact is that this kid doesn't have the fortitude or discipline to be an SEC player. He can't even figure out what his first name is supposed to be ... Edited by OrangeRev, Oct 31 2012, 02:11 PM.

Now maybe those same Family & Friends will tell him to: 1) Stop yakking on Twitter as he has done all fall 2) Lose #30 and get in FB shape by the spring. 3) Hit the books and stay eligible. It was well before Twitter but I heard that Travis Henry had very similar troubles. If you remember he was a highly thought of 4* TB from FL but FL backed off because they didn't think he could get into school. UT swooped in and got him admitted on some Dyslexia or ADD type waiver and UF was quite pissed. During his FR year he stole some stuff and took off to leave TN and go home. But his Mom smacked up upside the noggin and told him to suck it up and get back to Knoxville. As far as FB is concerned the rest was history and he played a HUGE role in the 1998 NC season. To bad Momma didn't tell him to keep his pants zipped up and there are now 9 little Travii out there by 9 different Baby Momma's. But the possible "good news" is the oldest of those Travii might be around 13 y/o now, so maybe in a few years we can recruit them as legacy's!!! |
