Linkiing a post from DrBubba1One on VC. I found it interesting since it is coming from a coach on the outside-Kevin Steele. Some will be critical of Steele, but he is a respected coach in the business and knows a lot more about football than the message board kings who want to attack anyone who goes against their beliefs.
Quote:

Kevin Steele spoke at the Knoxville QB today
Kevin is a UT grad and played at UT and coached under Coach Majors who was also in attendance. Kevin has veiwed UT game tapes this year.
He made the following observations about the UT situation in the following order:
1. there is a problem between the UT Athletic Dept and the UT Administration.
2. UT is running the same scheme as Florida, bama and ga and the big difference is talent level not the scheme
3.UT recruited along the I-85 corridor and got talent in the past from NC, SC, Tidewater area, New Jersey, VA as well as Tenn ( limited number of prospect in State), northern bama and ga; Atlanta, Southern Ohio and California
4. We need to get behind this UT foootball team and support the players and coaches. He was very adamant about this and this talk about firing a coach in mid season is wrong and we should wait unitl after the season. Get behind this team if you are a VOL fan!!!!!

He also talked about rules that limit practices and the number of hours you can practice and how many days you tackle in the spring(3) and fall(3) and how many days you have to wear shorts and the number of practice days and only so many hours per week.

He hit hard on Athletic Dept and college administration relationship. Kevin mentioned that Wednesday is 3rd down practice day and if students have labs from 2 to 5 and the student can not miss lab then they miss practice and then you wonder why plays break down and not function in 3rd down situations.

He mentioned that TRUST is the number one quality in recruiting a player. He said that stars mean nothing in recruiting . You must evaluate and coach the player and then you see if the player goes pro to see if you evaluated the high school propect appropriately. Kevin said you could count on Majors to close the deal in recruiting because of TRUST.

Kevin said that the hardest thing was 4 years ago when he coached at bama and they played at UT and being a UT graduate and wearing the A was real hard on him.
Kevin is doing speaking engagements and visiting football teams around the country. He has 4 championship rings from Majors, Osborne, Saban and Bowden. Mentioned that one coach south of here is not a good home visit coach (sa---)

The Grudenites should know that Gruden has been in contact with Kevin Steele in recent days to discuss football among other things.

I don't like Steele much and here is why:

1) He and Jimmy Sexton used and abused his old school UT, not once but TWICE in the last 4-5 years when he was at Clem's Son. He got Sexton to float his name as DC which then got him 200-300K raises at Clem's Son each time.

2) But there is a reason he is out giving speeches for a living now- he sucked as a DC at Clem's Son and WVU hung about 70-80 points on his ass in January of this year at the Orange Bowl. Clem's Son fired his ass right after wards since they had been seeing similar things all last year.

3) WTF is his point in #3 about UT's recruiting??? That is a Duuuh thing to say.

4) Is Steele saying Drooley hasn't recruited enough TALENT on defense??? I thought Tux said we had 100,000% better talent than 2 years ago?

5) I highly doubt UGA, UF, and Bammer are playing the 1 safety middle of the field coverage on 3rd and Goal from the 26 frickin yard line.

6) All coaches say this "wait till the season is over to fire the HC" but Ut did not do this with Majors nor with Phildo. Majors also fired Ken Donahue after a 0-6 start in 1988 and hired Doug Mathews to take his place. It happens ALL the time in MLB, NBA, and the NFL. And with HC salary's in the millions per year and DC/OC salary's nearing 1 million a year then cry me a river about being fired for not producing. I bet Clem's Son wish they had fired Steele and his 700-800K salary last season before they played their bowl game!

7) Are you really saying that Steele said Saban is NOT a good home visit coach??? Geez, he the very best in the business and his Top 3 classes for a gazillion years in a row despite losing assistants each year, is proof of that.

Kevin Steele can eat a bag-o-dicks for all I care.

If Tux quoted him correctly he said it was the same scheme defense as UGA, UF, Bammer, etc. I don't know WTF he means by that but it could mean he thinks the coaching is OK and is blaming the talent. He certainly seemed to be taking up for Coaches at UT in everything else he was saying. So if the coaches are fine and the scheme is the same as the better defenses in the SEC then you read his mind and tell me what he is saying.

Hate to be negative but i think we had less talent last year and were still ranked number 28 on total D, this year we are around 100 or so ... big difference.

Steele said that the talent on the defensive side of the ball is not equal to the talent that those other teams have on the defensive side at the scheme is not the problem.

On the part that AV, incorrectly interprets. the talent that we currently have on the defensive side of the ball is still vastly superior to the talent that Dooley inherited on the defensive side of the ball, so AV, your interpretation is once again flawed and your still wrong about the overall talent level.

AV keeps searching and hoping that he can say, "see, I told you so". But alas, poor Yorick (AV).

It's a fair comparison between last year and this season. The big improvement from last season to this season is on DL. The LBs and DBs are virtually the same personnel. Either Sunseri is not getting his plan in place, or the players are not adjusting to it very well. Giving up as many big plays and total yards should cost the man his job. I doubt if Majors would have kept him this far into the season.

The problem is iwhen we have better talent and still lose, it's on the coaching. Miss State and Akron didn't have better talent than Tenn and we lost one and the other gave us a battle. (Akron has only won one game this year.)

Cynical Idealist

The talent is better but not as good as ALA, FLA, UGA etc. We won't compete for championships until we do recruit on that level again.

Wow and the opportunities for Steele working for Gruden - says a lot of the attraction Gruden has within the coaching circles..

Now if Gruden could get EdO back in K-town things would be exciting to say the least.. FWIW - WHF is still out there that understands the Chuckie style "chuck and duck"?

The coaching on defense has been horrendous. The players are better than what we had in previous years, but still not on par to what Alabama, FL and UGA have.

Now that we are all on the same page after nit-picking this incessantly in another thread, hopefully we can move on now.

AV keeps searching and hoping that he can say, "see, I told you so". But alas, poor Yorick (AV).
But Tux, there is your dilemma. Lets say we have better talent and more players. But YOU have been unwilling to just blast Dooley and his Merry Gents out of the water as you did Fulmer- who BTW was 100,000% better HC than Drool's even though I came to despise him the last 4-5 years of his reign.

You cheer on the HC and his hand picked assistants. You say recruiting rankings don't mean anything BUT then you turn around in this very thread and admit we don't have the talent that UGA, UF, Bammer, etc have.

Do you understand you are saying completely opposite things?

On the other hand I am consistent:

1) Dooley should never have been hired based on what he brought to the game

2) Dooley isn't even a mediocre HC. He is a terrible motivator.

3) Dooley has been, for the most part, terrible at his assistant hires. 7 of the 9 left him last year and he didn't upgrade but maybe 2 of those 7 replacements.

4) Dooley has NOT recruited good enough to catch up with Bammer, LSU, UGA, LSU, or even as good as USCe or texas A&M. He just is a lazy and poor recruiter.

AV, there is no delimma, except in your mind. You have been proven wrong on the talent issue time and again.

You're not this dense. The talent is improved. It's still not where it should be to win championships. Why can't you grasp this?
