Rumor Mills Proved Wrong Again

For the past week, we heard nothing except that the "insiders" said that Dooley would be fired and gone by Sunday and Monday at the latest. We were going to have a new NFL coach by now. He was going to give everything up to be a Vol coach...at least that is what we were told.

Monday is basically gone and Dooley is still here. That s not to say that a move will not be made at year end. It could happen. Of course it may not happen and Dooley could return in 2013.

We have heard every excuse in the book from these "insiders". Their excuses range from Gruden looking at going back the NFL(How many times did we hear that his passion was college football and not the NFL?), Jimmy Cheek shot the idea down because it did not fit his agenda. Gruden called Lane Kiffin up and discussed UT....We have heard a plethora of rumors and excuse for why they did not occur.

The Gruden things, for what it sounds like is a few boosters who are working outside the authority of UT to try and lure Gruden to Tennessee. Plausible deniability? Could be. Thus far, Dave Hart has not tried to contact nor has he spoken to Gruden and his agent. Are our boosters going rogue?

Bottomline is that we have a responsible AD, who is using his brain and not his emotions to run his business. He understands that this team has the opportunity to win out and win more games than this program has won in several years. He understands that they could go to a bowl game. He understands that a bowl game brings in more money for the UTAD.

Dave Hart also understands that this staff is still recruiting players for next year, but the emotional outbursts of some not so intelligent fans have damaged our recruiting of some top players. That is being used against us by opposing coaches in recruiting. Finally Dave Hart understands that how we finish will go a long way towards building this program for 2014 and go towards getting this program ranked again. We will have 22 seniors in the two deep depth chart next season, so we could be in a position to see this program back where we want to see it.

As Orange Rev said today, our fans have bought into a rumor machine that continually feeds itself and produces nothing but rumor after rumor with no basis of truth to them.

Wait....did they say WHICH Sunday or Monday he would be fired? LOL

I posted on TOS that IF......Big IF...Dooley is back next year the so called inside source folks will back-track and tell us UT put a 5-6-7 million offer on the table and Gruden turned us down....Then the others on the WOW list just wasn't WOW enough and UT decided to keep Dooley for another year...Many folks have gone ALL-IN on Gruden and if he isn't hired I'm afraid the next guy will be a huge letdown to a lot of folks..

IMO Dooley wasn't getting fired yesterday or today and posted such (I guess I'm a insider now) and I've said he would finish out the season. These kids (Jr's and Sr's) have been through enough and firing Dooley now would be wrong IMO.

I wanted Fulmer gone but the way it was done was wrong IMO.

This is not Dave Hart's first rodeo. He has been through some real pressure cookers and this is no sweat off his read end. He knows what is best for the kids and the program.

He may think that a change is what's best at year end, but for now, he understands that this ship needs a strong rudder.

Our fans are such saps for rumors.

Surviving today was a victory for Dooley no doubt. If he survives through the week he's probably safe until the end of year unless Troy beats us which is very unlikely.

Well, we are not playing a top 10 school this week. Granted that we can not just roll the ball out there and win, but we have the talent and ability to run the table.

I'm sure something fell through at the last minute ... or someone got a raise to stay ... or some small little thingy changed the outcome.

What's important is that someone is Internet King.

Wow - what is this rodeo stuff?

To Hart's credit - he won't stand still. If Dooley can't axe Sunseri - my guess Hart will be more than happy to do so. Chaney - the same deal.

IMO *if* he were to make a change at the HCing slot at the end of the season - he would lean to hiring a Sabanite has has both schools he has some old school ties with - FSU and Florida.. He has watched how both of those programs have progressed - on the field and recruiting.

I doubt Dooley survives at the end but I don't think you need to make a change in the middle of the season anyway. It's embarrassing to the young men for their failures to be exposed in the limelight for a couple days. Then you have 4 games to play and hopefully you can get an ok bowl matchup where a win could be something to hang your hat on. Most coaches don't have the composure to keep their team together following a coaching fire, as Majors did. This is pretty similar to Shula in year 4 at Bama and he wasn't fired until the end of the season. The other thing is that you can't really replace the coach until the end of the year anyway. Even if you can get Gruden, nobody is going to walk off MNF before the season is over. If you want to go for someone like Chip Kelly you'd have to wait until January.

I think some people overreacted to Hart being visibly and vocally pissed at Dooley the last few weeks. Maybe Hart even said something that was overheard to the effect that he was wanted to fire Dooley ASAP. He was irate last year when we lost to Kentucky and even stated it to the media. Had it not been for him driving home from Lexington, giving him time to cool off, no telling what he would have done. Until negotiations are finalized and agreed upon, it wouldn't make sense to fire Dooley with just a few games to go. Hart should let Dooley finish the season even if we have finalized a contract with the new coach.
