I've really only lost hope in one area - kicking

Despite all the negativity that I've been reading these last two days, I'm still optimistic about our football team in just about every area. That is, I can see them improving as the season progresses. My pro-orange mindset had us as a 10-2 team at the beginning of the season, and I'm downgraded to 9-3. I'm OK with that, and I'm even hopelessly optimistic that we might upset Georgia or Alabama. So, I'm optimistic. Yep, overly and insanely and fanatically optimistic about the Vols.

Except. Kicking.

Shamefully, I've lost all hope here. I have no confidence in any aspect of our kicking game. Closing eyes. Waiting for disaster. Expecting failure.

Perhaps it is three years of Palardy. Perhaps it is three games in a row with missed extra points. Perhaps it is some sort of odd rotation at punter, and not really knowing why.

Can someone talk me off the ledge?

You're right. There is room for optimism. The Vols looked really good for 2 1/2 quarters and could have won the game after the failed fake punt. After that, things were pretty bad. I stay with my 8--4 prediction. I think we beat South Carolina but get upset some where down the road. But 7--5 is also possible. We are at a cross road now.

I'm still optimistic we steal a game from someone. I am, because we have the talent to do so. If we dont, then I'll probably be off Dooley's bandwagon at the end of the year (I'm optimistic and supportive, but if he doesnt do it this year he's not going to).

As for the kicking game, I'll talk you off the edge a bit. Our problem is just Palardy is a headcase. Bullock will fix it. He'd have fixed it already but he got hurt.

I have no earthly idea how we decide who is going to punt, though. There does not seem to be any reason to it. It's like we flip a coin on 3rd down.

Yes, Palardy is a headcase, but I think Bullock was really erratic before he was hurt ... I admit I didn't focus that much on him, but that was my impression.

Every other school in the nation can take a freshman out there and kick 40 yards field goals. We have not been able to get a decent kicker in years.

Forget singing the latest greatest all-american kicker or signing the local kid top appease coaches in the area. Look for kid with a strong leg who has had some success kicking the ball high and accurate.

People at the game were saying that Brodus was topping the ball during warm-ups at half-time. Oh well ... we might as well go with Palardy ... he kicks 'em low and so we'll probably have a few blocked, but we might get one in the 50+ yard range.

I'm pretty confident that there are at least 10 kickers in the state of Tennessee that can punt and place kick better than ANY kicker at UT. UT could probably get a female soccer player and do better than our current crop!!!

What's up with bashing Darr? He had a very solid game vs. Florida. If I was Coach Dooley, I'd just call Palardy into the office and tell him he is the kicker for the rest of the year and be done with it. Maybe the confidence of knowing he has a lock on the job might help. I was really hoping that the kicking coach (intern) who is also a left footer could help get Palardy straightened out. :powerT:

Dooley does not have full confidence in Darr as a punter. Dooley is rotating in Palardy for 1/3 of the punts ...

Palardy is handling the pooch punts, because he is more adept at angling to the corner.

Look at the stats, Tux. That may have been true in the past, but not now ...

Look at the punting in the UF game, there is no strategy evident:
  • Darr punted from the 50, FLA 45, UT 28 and UT 17
  • Palardy punted from the UT 46, UT 49 and UT 25

Then, when you look at the sequence, it is clear that the two are just being alternated:
  • at Ut50 Darr, M. punt 40 yards to the UF10, out-of-bounds.
  • at Ut46 Palardy, M. punt 50 yards to the UF4, Debose,A. return 13 yards to the UF17 (Randolph, B.).
  • at Uf45 Darr, M. punt 45 yards to the UF0, touchback.
  • at Ut49 Palardy, M. punt 33 yards to the UF18, out-of-bounds.
  • at Ut28 Darr, M. punt 50 yards to the UF22, downed.
  • at Ut25 Palardy, M. punt 50 yards to the UF25.
  • at Ut17 Darr, M. punt 43 yards to the UF40, fair catch by Debose,A..

That may change with Brodus topping the ball and Palardy likely to take back the role.

Darr's been of the the biggest surprises hasn't he? It seems like he does really good early then drops of slightly as game goes on but much better.

Darr seems to be coming around. Even if he is not getting the distance we all would like to see, his kicks are usually high enough to allow the coverage to get down field and prevent a big return. He seems to be coming around, albeit too slowly. He has the ability and he is a big, strong kid. Not so much worried about him as I am the place kicking. Certainly Coach Dooley is trying everything he can think of to remedy the problems. He brought in the kicking intern to try and help. ::shortbus::
