How The UT-Florida Game Was Really Decided; Our Run Game Did Not Lose This Game

When Burton lines up as the QB was anyone surprised he ran off tackle? He is not known as a passer, and has never thrown a touchdown pass. That is horrible for any DC to not know that, first year or not. I knew he was going to run it. If your defense is confused, call a freaking time out!!!

Rant over!!!

I just hope we get Bonner and McNeil up to speed on the playbook in the next two weeks because Brent Brewer is not the answer at safety and Bonner could replace Teague. Until we get up to speed in the secondary a repeat of the Florida fiasco is quite likely. Randolph wil be sorely missed.

What about blaming the def coord Tux, not just Cheney?

I am not blaming anyone.

No doubt that Pease made some great adjustments that we did not match. However, the bottomline was that some of our guys blew their assignments and it cost us.

This was one game and the overreaction by some fans is embarrassing.

I see your point BJ, but for me it is difficult to place the blame on Sal since he held Florida to something like 3-17 on third down conversions plus a good goal line stand and that's going up against a good offensive line. The breakdowns were a combination of two things, lack of speed and athleticism from the Tennessee corners and great Florida blocking on the long TD run. Give Coach Sunseri two good SEC type corners and you will see a good defense. Right now we are handicapped in the secondary with only Byron Moore being SEC material.

On the other hand, give Chaney two SEC running backs with speed, size and power, it changes our offense from a one dimensional one. Also, throw in a couple of good tight ends where he is handicapped now. He also doesn't have the threat of a good field goal kicker. Cheney has limitation too. Sal failed to make adjustments on the corners with the reverses and running wide. Now their QB did a heck of a job with some of those passes and his ability to run. They had better athletes on both sides of the ball. I just think too much focus goes on Cheney and the defense gets a pass, especially by Tux.

Burning Man, 2009 FOREVER

Just to clarify: I'm not exactly giving the defense a pass. I just expected them to be terrible.

One huge surprise (literall): McCullers. Florida tried that like 3 times and gave up on the endeavor completely. If they hadnt, he'd have killed Gilleslee....or at least broken something.

I have to agree with Tux on this argument. I thought we ran ok. We abanded it when we got down 27-20 and did nothing but throw after that. No the run game wasn't great. Yes there was some minimal gains but it accomplished we wanted it to do. It made Florida have to recognize it. Once we abanded it that just teed off on Bray and he was unable to read it or do anything about it.

We are going to have people complaining about the offense because we lost. They were waiting in ambush.

We did not lose because of our running game, but some people have their agendas and there are some who don't like and understand the Vols offense. They are pounding on their chests saying "told you so", but they have yet to demonstrate to anyone how the running game caused the Vols to lose the game.

So they continue to overreact and assess blame and throw it anywhere they can. How is that going to help the team prepare for the next nine games?

A few observations:

1. We need play calling that is imaginative and that takes the pressure off of Bray ( Shovel passes, wheel routes, bubble screens, quick pitches to the edge, short passes) Continually hitting the A or B gap and then passing downfield for 15-30 yards on third and ten will get your quarterback killed.

2. Our corners do not have SEC speed and when they get the least bit out of alignment they are toast.

3. Our linebackers played like crap, AJ could not get off blocks, Jacques Smith lost containment the entire game, the other two were also having trouble with Florida's guards.

4. No pressure on Driscoll and when we blitzed we got burned. (Zone coverage would have held Driscoll in check and would have been more effective against Florida's receivers).

5. Ditch the pistol formation and put Bray under center in an I formations and you will see a big difference in our run game.

6. Coach Jim Chaney sucks.
WE WILL NEVER WIN BIG in the SEC with Chaney as our OC!!!! It WILL NOT happen....Go ahead Tux and try to convince everyone that playing Chaney PUSSY BALL will win big in the SEC..

You MUST have the ability to line up...and POUND the other team ASS when you need to in order to win in big games in the SEC. You must be able to control the LOS and move the ball on the ground...AND I DON'T give a damn how YOU RUN THE BALL!!!

Our HIGH POWERED...CAN'T BE STOPPED passing attack will not win BIG in the SEC without some imagination in the running game along with being physical in the running game which WE WILL NOT be under Chaney's soft ass PUSSY BALL.

I'm sure our high-powered passing attack without any imagination in the running game will do well against Arkron and Troy....But get back to me after the Georgia, USC, Bama and Miss. St games and tell me more!!!

Sal will have our defense playing SEC winning defense when he get the tools he needs to meet his system.(If Dooley's ass isn't fired before he has the chance) We have little depth on defense and spending a quarter and a half chasing those fast shits from Florida around isn't good for a defense with very little depth. Chaney had our high powered passing attack going 3 and outs and over 4 (four) series our offense held onto the ball for a total of 1 minute and 26 seconds on the game-clock!! That is a recipe for getting your ass blown out late in games against the big boys!!

A damn physical offense would have taken the ball after we stopped the fake punt and lined up and and whipped Florida ass..moved the ball..scored and had Florida wondering what just happened!! What does Chaney PUSSY BALL do..goes to the Can't be STOPPED passing attack and goes 3 and out with a grounding call!!! Just like Florida's defensive cord. knew Chaney would do.

Hope folks are happy with 6-6...7-5 record with a 8-9 win sprinkled in here and there with a upset here and there...Because that is what you are getting with a SOFT offense in ths big-boy league.

Good LUCK!

Damn, one minute and 26 seconds for four series is an NCAA record. That's what happens when the other team plays a nickel or dime defense and you still insist on passing the ball. Five yards total offense in the 4th quarter tells the entire story. As aside, I remember Chaney when he was offensive coordinator at Purdue and his offense looked great then, but looks nothing like his offense now. Maybe Drew Brees and Joe Tiller had something to do with that. Day and night comparison.

Shake....he was playing against the SLOW-10 defenses back then. Shit will not work in the SEC enough to beat the big-dogs except for a game here and there. A game here and there ain't gonna cut it!!

Chaney will get Dooley fired if he let's him continue!!

That make sense Phil, I didn't realize it at the time but Chaney called 13 consecutive pass plays. Now that's balance............

High powered flinging the ball down the field offense will dig out of a 14 point hole. Need two or three big plays - to make that happen. Its not a grind it out style - its a big play offense.

Tennessee didn't have enough big plays from their offense vs UF.
