UT-Florida Drive Charts This game was not lost because we lacked a dominant running game. No, if you look at this you will see that Florida gouged our defense for runs of 45 yards by Gillislee, 80 yards by Burton, and another 33 yards by Gillislee. Those three runs account for 158 yards and resulted in 17 Gator points - all from the late 3rd quarter on. Also take into account that Driskell ran for 81 yards on scrambles set up because we lost contain. The Gators picked up another 31 yard rushing on the last drive that was all about running out the clock, while our guys tried to strip the ball loose. Our defense was beaten on scoring plays of 14 yards (14 yard Burton run), 80 yard run by Burton, a 23 yard TD pass set up by a 45 yard run and a 75 yard TD pass. The Gators then had a field goal, set up by a 33 yard run by Gillislee. Our defense got gouged badly by big plays. Florida did not grind the balll out on us. It was all done on the perimeter after we lost containment. Break it down and it looks like this: * Florida ended up with 338 yards rushing * 3 carries resulted in 158 yards * 8 QB scrambles account for another 81 yards. * 31 yards running the clock out. If you take those away, our defense held Florida to 48 yards rushing on 30 carries. Our interior defense was stellar. It was all about big plays that developed around our edge and our secondary did not have the speed to make the plays. For those complaining about our ground game, we did rush for 94 yards-all in the first three quarters of the game. By the early fourth quarter, we were down two scores and to go exclusively pass. If our defense had not given up big plays, our rushing totals would have been completely different. We would have likely had another 30 yards on the ground if not for falling behind from the big scoring plays on our defense. Had we built a lead from that, we could gained another 20-30 yards from running the clock out as well. The bottom line is that some folks need to remember what actually took place in the game and look back at the drives to arrive at a realistic conclusion before going off on their emotional rants. |

Containment on the edges and on the quarterback (as he gets out of the pocket) has been problematic in all of our games ... one would think that this might be solved with some zone defenses, but we've have shown a lot of vulnerability with passes over the middle when we are in zone. |

Lack of adjustments by us and good adjustments by Fl also played a role. But to rule out our running game as a contributing factor is ignoring what happened on the field. |

If you look at the big picture, it did. If we could consistently move the ball on the ground, and with our passing attack, we would have won the game. The lack of running made us rely on passing more. And being one dimensional is the vulnerability of a pass oriented team only. |

A few observations: 1. We need play calling that is imaginative and that takes the pressure off of Bray ( Shovel passes, wheel routes, bubble screens, quick pitches to the edge, short passes) Continually hitting the A or B gap and then passing downfield for 15-30 yards on third and ten will get your quarterback killed. 2. Our corners do not have SEC speed and when they get the least bit out of alignment they are toast. 3. Our linebackers played like crap, AJ could not get off blocks, Jacques Smith lost containment the entire game, the other two were also having trouble with Florida's guards. 4. No pressure on Driscoll and when we blitzed we got burned. (Zone coverage would have held Driscoll in check and would have been more effective against Florida's receivers). 5. Ditch the pistol formation and put Bray under center in an I formations and you will see a big difference in our run game. 6. Coach Jim Chaney sucks. |

Did you watch the same game that I did? Or did you and phil watch that game off in outerspace? We were leading and had a nice mix of run and pass. Within a couple of defensive series we were down 14 points. Running the football down 14 points is not going to get you a lot of quick points. |

The I formation is not necessary. I prefer taking the snap under center, but using the tight ends and hbacks are all you need to ruin the ball better. No need to use a fullback in most situations, unless it is goal line or short yardage....and a good running back. |

Tux If you look at how many times we gained one or two yards running the ball, then we had to make it up passing. If we had such an effective passing game as you claim, why did we only gain five yards in the 4th quarter? Because Tenn never was a threat to run the ball long. So much for mixing it up! |

BJ: Two reasons. 1) Cheney called a 2) Big plays by Florida put us behind. *Chaney was a much better OC when Kiffin was calling the plays |

Tux If we were a long run threat the entire game, we wouldn't be down 14 points. Get it! Don't blame Cheney for UT's problems. Florida had better athletes and Cheney had the Vols ahead midway through the third quarter. Blame the defensive coordinator for not making adjustments to pass slants, reverses, and runs off the ends. He called a bad game giving up 37 points and that could have been worst if the last long run wasn't out of bounds by a football. Tux, you need to watch the game again. |

I see you believe that our run game was responsible for giving up the big plays that put us behind. Maybe Coach Dooley will replace those long run games that were playing defensive end and cornerback at the time.
