Positions Needing An Upgrade

Just my opinion, but based on the play over the first three games and against Florida last night, there are some positions in need of an upgrade in talent and speed.

In my opinion. both of our corner backs are experienced, but lack the speed and talent to make the plays against top SEC talent. Our lack of speed in the secondary was exposed in the second half last night. Teague and Waggner were left in the dust last night. it is not the first time that both have been left at the starting line. This could be a time to work Bonner and Coleman into the line up. If these guys lack the straight up speed, they need to take better angles to the ball than they have this season.

Jaquez Smith made some good plays, but they were overshadowed by the numerous times that he pinched/crashed from his jack linebacker position and lost contain and allowed Florida to get the edge and a man advantage on the edge. His mistakes against the Florida running game alone were worth several points last night.

It looks as if LaDarrell McNeil will likely move up and get more playing time along side of Byron More and Brent Brewer due to Brian Randolph's injury.

Smith maybe most improved player this season but the mistakes you point our are part of the 3-4 growing pains. Something we all expected before season.I was horrified with how slow our DB's really are. Wow I've never seen such a slow SEC secondary. Tux what about Maggitt. Why did he not have a good game?

I might expect that Byron Moore might move to free safety but Wilks probably starts there next Saturday. You are right about lacking "catch-up" speed at corner even though Teague and Waggner did a decent job in straight coverage situations in the game and also on run support when the tailback carried the ball.
Smith was around the ball and was aggressive. You are right though, he bite "down" too quickly and lost containment and it cost UT dearly.
Tiny and his penalties also hurt in this game. He'd better get it together or I could see Dallas Thomas back at tackle with Marcus Jackson starting at the left guard. Kerbyson is also going to push James off what I saw last night.

We pretty much knew coming in that our backline on defense was a problem along with depth at linebacker. If Teague is a SEC corner I'm a damn Chinese short order cook!!! If he is the best we've got we are shit out of luck...I like the kid a lot, but damn nice guys who can't play get you beat!! One big reason you need an offense that can keep the defense off the field late in the game.

Did anybody see the last 8 minutes of the Stanford-USC game...Thats how you beat teams late in the game.

We also need a leader at QB that doesn't pout when the going gets tough that will by gosh put the team on his shoulders and by-gosh make things happen. I've been told he was a smart ass after the game too. Go figure!!!

I'm just guessing, but I would anticipate a big dose of Coleman and/or Bonner next Saturday. As far as your comments about Bray, I am not surprised if he did act like an ass after the game. He's a first round draft choice from the neck down, but he's going to have to beat two ranked teams for me to be back on his band wagon again. Right now I see his as the white DaRick.

Good call Lonzo...Bray is a front runner and a bottle thrower and pouts when the going gets tough. Just what you are looking for in a qb when trying to beat Fl, Ga, Bama, USC etc..

Not sure he will grow up before he leaves Knoxville.

Running backs are bad. I think what we saw out of Raijon last night is about all we can expect out of him. He's really improved alot, and he's not what I'd call terrible. The problem is that he is the best we have. In the SEC you really need two or even three quality backs, guys who are physical enough but also have vision and some acceptable speed. We dont have one guy that fits that criteria. Not one.

I'd put McCullers at CB before Teague ever played another down there. He's a good athlete. He IS NOT A CORNERBACK. We have done that poor kid a horrible disservice playing him there for the last three years. He should be our slot WR right now.

Other than those two positions, CB anb RB, frankly we are talented enough to compete. We have to do a better job with our schemes and preparation, however.

Just think Montario Hardesty was a huge factor in Kiffin's first year. He wasn't great, but he was pretty good. UT can't even sniff at a back of this caliber!!!

Yeah. If we had a back like Hardesty right now, we'd be a whole hell of a lot better running the ball (and by extension, just be a whole lot better overall).

I think people misinterpret what I've been saying about the running game.

First off we need a new offensive coordinator and a kicker. Our entire secondary sucks due to lack of talent (Brewer, Teague, Waggner, and Wilks) or lack of experience (Coleman Bonner, McNeil, Randolph and Moore). Moore and Randolph are good players, Bonner will be all SEC before he leaves and the jury is still out on Coleman and McNeil. Coach Sunseri is a good DC and if you cannot see that then your knowledge of football is limited. Our defense played with emotion and intensity while the offense was stuck on illegal procedures, intentional grounding, offensive tackles not protecting the QB, and dropped passes. The offense showed little grit or want to and that is on coaching PERIOD. Our linebackers played like they had never been taught how to shed a block and that includes AJ Johnson. The Florida guards were putting the wood to them. I could go on but what's the purpose. Oh, did I mention that Coach Jim Chaney SUCKS.

Premature to say Sunseri is a good DC. I'm not really worried about him eventually being one, but he's still learning on the job. Clearly. Florida out-schemed and outplayed us from 5 mins into the third quarter on last night; on both sides of the ball.

I will be glad when Tennessee gets beyond the "we have to play X at that position because we don't have anybody else" on the depth chart, especially in the kicking game and on defense.

When considering UT as a possible signee, do you think RB recruits will consider which is the lesser of two evils - An OC who doesn't appear to like the run vs. immediate playing time over another team where they might have to wait a year or two to see playing time?
