In the days leading up to the NCST lid lifter, I sent a letter of encouragement to Coach Dooley. I basically told him that all Tennessee media is not like Jimmy HiYams and that the knowledgeable fans who understood the absolutely massive re=building job that he faced when he arrived in Knoxville were still very much in full support of his work. I really didn't expect a response, but got one in the mail today. I was impressed. As busy as he must be with the Florida game coming up and big visit weekend coming up, he still took a couple of minutes to dictate a response. Here is what he said:

Dear W.E.,

Thank you for your kind letter. I appreciate your support of our program at the University of Tennessee and most of all the support for our players.

The tough years are behind us and I am confident that we have built the right foundation that will lead us to great success in the future.

Thank you again for your continued support.

GO VOLS!

Sincerely,
Derek Dooley

He signed it personally with a pen with orange ink!

I don't think it is any secret that I have been pulling for this young coach to be successful. I have always believed he is a class act and a tremendous front man and representative for Tennessee football. I still believe he has grown over the very difficult last two years and that he can move forward and become one of the top coaches in all of college football. He is on the threshold of proving he can do the job. The jury, of course, may still be out for some and I understand that position. For my part, I hope he gets a signature win on Saturday and never looks back! :powerT:

Lonzo, thanks for sharing that with us. You are right in that there are a lot of UT fans who do understand the mess that was UT football when he took over. Still, they stood by him and the football program. Our reward will be that we will have full appreciation in what he hs done at UT and will have endured the tough times without falling for the memes of the losers who trash the program.

Rev.
I don't think I have the equipment to do that. I have a deskjet 1000 printer. Will be glad to scan and post if I can figure out how to do it. Could I do it at the public library tomorrow if I went down there?

it's good to know that a large number of us think Coach Dooley is rebuilding the program the right way. I'm sure your letter meant a good deal to him and I thank you for expressing in a personal way what so many of us (sane) Vol fans feel! :beers:

Burning Man, 2009 FOREVER

That's cool.

I have some UT memorabilia I've collected over the years. My grandfather was tight with the Majors clan over the years (he coached with some of them in Pop Warner in the 50's or something, and his brother was one of Knoxville's finiest who... uh... helped keep Johnny from getting DUIs).

Anyway, one of the coolest things is a fake certificate for my dad. It says: YOU ARE A CERTIFIED JACKASS. Signed, Johnny Majors

Not many coaches would write back. I had a chance to talk to Dooley shortly after he became coach here at the airport but it didn't dawn on me it was him until he was about 20 steps away, walking toward the Hilton. Guess that's where he was staying at the time. We looked right at each other and I nodded and he nodded back and I didn't even know that was our coach until it was too late to say anything to him. I met Monte Kiffin at the airport once and almost missed my plane to talk to him. He was super cool. Great story Wagee. Hopefully we won't lose this weekend or you might get blamed for taking time out of the preparation. Ha ha.

Nice post....99.9% of us wants Dooley to make it here. IMO he's a class act and is what the program needs. In the end it will be about the wins and loses...but I think Hart etc..will give Dooley plenty of time to succeed or fail.

Anyone that knows how to spell football knows what shape the program was in when Dooley took over....We are not there yet but we are a hell of a lot closer than we were 24 months ago.
