Big Orange Report 9-10-12 By Warner Agee Vols cruise past Georgia State, Brace for Gators Tennessee’s 23rd ranked Volunteers accomplished several goals in the 51-13 victory over Georgia State on a soggy afternoon in Knoxville. The Vols withstood an early adrenalin rush by the visitors and took command of the contest in the second quarter on the way to win No. 2 on the season. Tennessee also was able to hold out starting linebackers Herman Lathers and Curt Maggitt, thus avoiding any danger of further injury to a pair of key components on the defensive unit. And finally, the Big Orange got a multitude of players into the contest, many seeing action for the first time in their careers. True freshmen Quenshaun Watson, Deion Bonner, LaDarrell McNeil, Justin King, Omari Phillips, Jason Croom, Daniel Gray, and Trent Taylor tossed aside the red-shirt in this contest. Three red-shirt freshmen offensive linemen, tackles Kyler Kerbyson and Alan Posey, plus center Mack Crowder played for a quarter and a half in the game. Notable Numbers Junior Cordarrelle Patterson almost reached the 200-yard plateau in the multi-purpose category. He finished the game with 18 yards rushing, 71 receiving and 106 on kickoff returns for a total of 195 all-purpose yards in the game. Backup linebacker Channing Fugate had seven total tackles to join sophomore free safety Brian Randolph at the top of the charts for the defense. Watson had 27 yards rushing and showed quick burst. Key Matchups Vol wideouts vs. Gator cornerbacks—Florida most likely starts two sophomore corners with little experience against Tennessee this week. Marcus Robinson and Loucheiz Purifoy face the SEC’s best tandem of receivers, Patterson and Hunter. Purifoy actually beat out last year’s starter Cody Riggs, the younger brother of former Vol Gerald Riggs, Jr. Florida opened last year’s game in a soft zone, tried to go to man after Hunter was hurt and would up drawing several pass interference penalties. Chances are the Gator corners will need some safety help in this game. Tiny Richardson vs. Dominique Easley—A tough assignment for the Vol sophomore here because Easley is one of the top pass rushers in the SEC this season. If Richardson can handle the Florida junior without assistance, it will enhance the entire UT offensive effort. Richardson will enjoy a substantial size advantage here, four inches taller and 50 pounds heavier than Easley. Vol linebackers vs. Mike Gillislee—Florida’s senior tailback runs with authority and has a nice burst if he reaches the second level of the defense. Facing a hostile Neyland Stadium crowd, one must figure that the Gators will try to establish some kind of effective running game early to keep the pressure off their young quarterback. If Tennessee nose tackles can gum up the middle, it will free up the inside linebackers to concentrate on meeting Gillislee in the gaps. (Note- Gillislee was injured in the A&M game and his status for this weekend was questionable at this writing.) Jim Chaney vs. Dan Quinn and Will Muschamp—One might expect that Chaney will have something special in the game plan that the Gator defensive staff hasn’t seen and may not expect. Florida must honor the pass first, so any wrinkles that might produce positive yardage on the ground will be a big bonus for the Big Orange offense. The wildcat formation may be one of the things Chaney has in mind. Penalties and turnovers Florida was the most penalized team in the SEC last year. They haven’t looked much more disciplined this season. Certainly the red flag and a crucial turnover or two could be huge turning points in the contest. Point of attack Defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri is going to want to get early and consistent pressure on Gator quarterback Jeff Driskel. The true sophomore comes into the game with his confidence high after leading Florida to the come from behind win at Texas A&M last weekend. Sunseri’s blitz packages are going to be a significant item on Saturday. Vol Notes ESPN Game Day will be in Knoxville on Saturday for this top 25 showdown between SEC east foes. This is another positive development and signals progress in Coach Derek Dooley’s rebuilding efforts with the Vol football program. Where Florida will attack--- Muschamp is a macho, egotistical man. He will want to establish the run. However, Brent Pease, the OC will go at the Vol defense with passes to the tight ends running the hash marks and short to mid range crossing patterns underneath the Tennessee safties. On defense, they will come with the blitz early and often as Bray is what Muschamp fears most. They will try to intimidate Vol wide receivers, which, in my opinion, will be a big mistake. Where Tennessee will attack-- Jim Chaney looks for match ups that favor his offense. He believes his wide receivers can beat any single coverage that they draw. He will also want to get the ball to playmakers like Devrin Young in the short zones, the check down throws. Chaney will hope that the pass game will loosen up the Gator defense and allow for some fruitful running. Wildcat will be in play for the Vols in this game. Florida has a fast defense, but they will over run mis direction plays many times. On defense, Sal has been stressing maintaining rush lanes and keeping Driskel in the pocket. Coach Sunseri wants to try and make Driskel win with his arm, not his feet. Sunseri probably believes his corners can cover the young Gator receivers with press, man to man coverage. Pass rushers Maggitt, Fowlkes, Bohannon and Smith are real keys for Tennessee in this one. |
